If the game flopped, then PGI would be in serious trouble financially, to the point where the likeliest outcome would be the cessation of operations.
But if MechWarrior 5 went Epic Games Store exclusive and PGI got a cash infusion from Epic, they wouldn’t have to worry. Epic guarantees their sales to the point where they could at least continue as a business. On top of that, MechWarrior 5 already uses the Unreal 4 engine, making even more sense for an exclusive deal.
If this all turns out to be true, I can’t blame PGI for taking the money. Games development is a risky business and most studios are one bad game from going bankrupt. That said, they promised a Steam release with their pre-order, and judging by the MechWarrior subreddit, people would be mighty upset if MechWarrior 5 were to suddenly become an Epic exclusive. > | |

Na ja, die AAA-Spiele kann man ja auch alternativ auf den hauseigenen Plattformen kaufen. Die hat doch eh jeder installiert.

I hate posting a review before beating the game, but I think this needs to be said early. A lot of reviews here are "Eh, it's not my thing. Refund!" without fully explaining what it is. If you're seeing this game going "I would like to know if I would waste my money or not" I'm happy to weigh in.
In short, it's totally fine, and worth $30 easily, but go in with an understanding that this is a different type of game. It should NOT be compared to the earlier Machine Games titles, but instead to RPG-shooters like Destiny 2, Far Cry: New Dawn, and Borderlands.
I will mention that I've had some time to sit down and play this with and without co-op, so both are represented.
It's fine. If you want a single-player game, the AI works far better than you might think. If you want co-op, and you and your friend both have good internet, you shouldn't have much trouble. This is a very open-area game with a lot of running around to find stuff and fight enemies. Frankly, if you're okay with "arcade-y" shooters, you really won't care that you see the same scenery a few times. No two fight goes the exact same because areas repopulate with different types of enemies. It's probably the easiest Wolfenstein game I've played, but I recently ran through The Old Blood on Bring 'em On, so maybe I'm not the average gamer. The AI is very competent at fighting and keeps herself intact through most combat.
The shooting is great (obviously...it's id Tech!). The banter is fine. The only problem I've seen personally is I can't hear any music at all. Maybe my audio mix is screwed up, but part of me just wants to pull out my DOOM soundtrack and throw it in the background on my PC.
This is not a story-based game. It has story, it has an arc, but it is NOT one you should go into expecting Naughty Dog-level's of care. It's a looter-shooter, without the loot, and without the open world. That makes it sound negative, but honestly, I really like it that way. With that in mind, if you compare it to its contemporaries, such as Borderlands or Destiny 2, it absolutely embarrasses them. If you don't like how slow and floaty the combat of Borderlands is, this should be a breath of fresh air. The combat in here even gives Destiny 2 a run for its money in places, as it tends to be faster and with far less confusion and downtime.
Where it best compares is Far Cry: New Dawn. They are INCREDIBLY similar games. Except, this game does not have predatory microtransactions. I have played for a few hours and have already gotten a solid amount of the gun-addons I want and am making my way through the skins. The key is hunting for the coded chests, and completing side-quests. Where New Dawn felt like a chore to get up levels (the ethanol and crap), this feels like actual genuine fun. I hope this becomes the new gold-standard for open-ended RPG-shooters.
But it's not an open-world. Some may hate that. But if you're an adult with far too many commitments, it provides that perfect drop-in and out play. It has no need to be open world, because it would be wasted, like many open world games are right now.
Last point is the price. I wish more games were $30 USD or less. There is so much overpriced garbage that you can tell had little-to-no development and yet they have the gall to ask $60 for it and develop it over time. This price helped set me in the right mindset, and respect the development time and effort put in, despite it likely being less than their previous titles. It would be a tough sell at $60, but I have no shame in recommending it at $30. I have no opinion on the $40 buddy-pass version because I have no friends (I tried co-op with quickmatching).
Well, that's my two cents. Hope this helps you decide if you want it or not.
