Why is the show gone?
| The Financial Model
The format of The Jayne Show was heavily inspired by the work that I had been doing at Envy, particularly as it related to media sales, sponsorships, and partnerships. I think it's important to understand the economic incentives that exist for content creators and teams, so let's talk some actual numbers.
In a single month, a content creator of my size will earn between 8k USD and 12k USD if they publish daily videos on YouTube, and they'll earn between 8k USD and 20k USD if they stream daily on Twitch. I've only been streaming about 2-3 days a week, so my revenue from Twitch has been a lot closer to that 8k USD mark.
For Twitch, ~10% of revenue comes from advertisements and ~90% from paid subscriptions, whereas on YouTube this number is reversed with ~90% of revenue coming from advertisements and ~10% from paid membership, if the creator even has memberships enabled at all. That being said, the advertisements that I'm talking about above are the ones that are natively served by the platform.
However, things get crazy when you negotiate directly with a sponsor.
A content creator of my size can earn between 1k USD and 2k USD if they include sponsored integrations or activations on their content.* For a brand with a poor reputation like Raid: Shadow Legends, then this number becomes closer to 4k USD, and if a mainstream brand comes knocking, then it can go higher still.
*The vast majority of creators are also woefully unaware of the value of their audience and will constantly get ripped off by sponsors, agencies, and teams. So, if you are a creator and you're reading this going wtf??? then please DM me and let's talk. Especially for creators on the edge of going full-time, a good brand partnership can push you over the edge.
Anyway, if you aren't following along with my napkin math, then basically in the worst case scenario if I were to include sponsorships on daily content, then I'd earn at minimum an extra 30k USD per month - which is more than I'd make from all other sources of revenue combined. Again, this is for creators of my size, and while I may be notable in my corner of the internet, in the big scheme of things I'm a minor player at best, and things get way crazier as you become more popular.
Advertising really does run the internet.
Anyway, that was the financial model that the The Jayne Show was designed to take advantage of... but a very insidious side effect appears when you create content for the purpose of selling sponsorships: The audience stops being your customers* and instead they become your product. To be more specific, the manipulation of your audience** become the product that you sell.
...
**These companies wouldn't be paying creators these amounts of money if they didn't have a positive ROI. I think most creators are like "whatever, let's just run this ad, everyone in my channel will just ignore or tolerate it and then we can get back to whatever we were doing" but a small percentage of your audience is influenced to the point where they buy whatever you are advertising. If not immediately, then eventually, and I think the management of this is a creator's moral responsibility.
Although the financial model was not the only reason that I decided to stop running The Jayne Show until I could better design it, it was most certainly the main one. Those incentives perverted how the show was being run and developed, and I don't believe that you can change a system without changing the incentives present within it, so in my opinion, a hard reset was necessary. | |
