| DeSantis's new immigration law makes any out-of-state driver's license void if the person using it is undocumented.
If you look Hispanic and don't have papers, they will seize your license and deport you unless you can prove citizenship. It's not worth the risk, they won't go.
...
I think this is going to backfire on them badly. Florida needs to learn.
When The U.S. Government Tried To Replace Migrant Farmworkers With High Schoolers
| The year was 1965. On Cinco de Mayo, newspapers across the country reported that Secretary of Labor W. Willard Wirtz wanted to recruit 20,000 high schoolers to replace the hundreds of thousands of Mexican agricultural workers who had labored in the United States under the so-called Bracero Program.
...
Problems arose immediately for the A-TEAM nationwide. In California's Salinas Valley, 200 teenagers from New Mexico, Kansas and Wyoming quit after just two weeks on the job. "We worked three days and all of us are broke," the Associated Press quoted one teen as saying. Students elsewhere staged strikes. At the end, the A-TEAM was considered a giant failure and was never tried again.
...
"These [high school students] had the words and whiteness to say what they were feeling and could act out in a way that Mexican-Americans who had been living this way for decades simply didn't have the power or space for the American public to listen to them," she says. "The students dropped out because the conditions were so atrocious, and the growers weren't able to mask that up."

Wir wissen jetzt auch warum: Der Whistleblower ist untergetaucht!
| A top witness in a Republican investigation into the Biden family has apparently up and disappeared without a trace—or at least that’s what Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said Sunday on Fox News.
On Wednesday, Comer—the chairman of the House Oversight Committee—held a much-hyped press conference in which he promised to expose the preliminary findings of four months’ worth of scrutiny into the Biden family’s business dealings. Publicized as a “judgment day” for President Joe Biden, the conference ultimately proved anticlimactic, largely consisting of Comer throwing around vague, unsubstantiated accusations and failing to link the president to any of his relatives’ alleged “influence peddling.”
But on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures, Comer offered up what appeared to be a partial excuse: The probe’s primary informant had flown the coop.
“Well, unfortunately, we can’t track down the informant,” the Kentucky representative told host Maria Bartiromo. “We’re hopeful that the informant is still there. The whistleblower knows the informant. The whistleblower is very credible.”
A credulous Bartiromo interrupted. “Hold on a second, Congressman. Did you just say that the whistleblower or the informant is now missing?”
“Well, we’re hopeful that we can find the informant,” Comer said. “Remember, these informants are kind of in the spy business, so they don’t make a habit of being seen a lot or being high-profile or anything like that.”

In North Carolina wirds eng und muss auf einen Rep hoffen:
| North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, now in the waning years of his second term, has suddenly found himself back on a campaign trail.
On Wednesday, flanked by supporters in a fifth-floor classroom at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, Mr. Cooper made a direct appeal to residents. But he was not looking for thousands of votes. Just one.
North Carolina’s Republican-dominated legislature has passed a bill banning most abortions after 12 weeks. Mr. Cooper, a Democrat, vetoed the bill. But to prevent the legislature from using its razor-thin supermajority to override his veto, Mr. Cooper is asking voters to pressure Republican lawmakers. Convincing just one legislator will keep the state’s current abortion law — allowing it up to 20 weeks — in place.
In Wilmington, he urged voters to send a message to their representatives in the legislature — “ask them to keep their promise” to preserve existing abortion laws, he said, referring to Republican lawmakers he said had previously signaled some support for abortion access.
Let them know, he said, “whether it’s a phone call, or it’s an email, or it’s a text.”

| (JTA) — Florida’s state education department rejected two new Holocaust-focused textbooks for classroom use, while forcing at least one other textbook to alter a passage about the Hebrew Bible in order to meet state approval.
The books were rejected as part of a broader review of new K-12 social studies material. According to documents provided by the state, the education department did not approve any new texts on the Holocaust this year.
Following publication of this article, Alex Lanfranconi, the education department’s director of communications, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the state has “many textbooks and other approved instructional materials that support our efforts to make sure our students never forget about the horrific annihilation of Jews by Nazi Germany.”
The books the department rejected this year “did not meet our high standards for instructional materials,” Lanfranconi added.
| “Modern Genocides” was rejected in part for its discussion of “special topics” prohibited by the state. The list of such topics includes terms such as “social justice” and “critical race theory,”a phrase that traditionally concerns a method of legal analysis but that Republicans have used pejoratively to refer to discussion of systemic racism in the United States. The department did not clarify which prohibited “special topics” the book included. | |
| Meanwhile, another social studies textbook intended for grades 6-8 was forced by the department to alter a reference to the Hebrew Bible in order to meet state standards. According to state documents, the book’s original version included a question for students reading, “What social justice issues are included in the Hebrew Bible?”
That was altered to an approved version that replaced the phrase “social justice issues” with the term “key principles.” The state’s rationale for the change was that the original phrasing used “Politically charged language when referencing the Hebrew Bible.”
DeSantis has advanced Holocaust education while also enabling parents to effectively remove Holocaust literature they don’t like from school libraries. Florida requires Holocaust education in grades K-12, and in 2020, DeSantis signed a law requiring public schools to certify that they teach about the Holocaust. But a law passed last year allows parents to challenge instructional materials and books in public school libraries, and parents in the state have filed challenges that have led to the temporary or permanent removal of Holocaust literature on the grounds that they are inappropriate for children.
Another law, called the “Stop WOKE Act,” bans educators from making students feel guilt or shame in relation to historical events. The state education department also forbids the instruction of “critical race theory.”

Jemand hat versucht Barrieren beim Weißen Haus mit nem U-Haul Truck zu durchbrechen:
| A U-Haul driver was taken into custody Monday night after crashing their vehicle into security barriers at Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House, the Secret Service confirmed. The details of the incident are unclear but Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed Tuesday morning that a preliminary investigation revealed the driver “may have intentionally struck the security barriers.” The incident happened just prior to 10 p.m. on Monday, a statement from the Secret Service confirmed. “Shortly before 10:00 p.m. Monday, Secret Service Uniformed Division officers detained the driver of a box truck after the vehicle collided with security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square on 16th Street,” the statement said. No injuries were reported “and the cause and manner of the crash remain under investigation.” Road closures were in effect along with pedestrian walkways. K9s and a robot unit were used to check the truck, which was subsequently given the all clear, however the driver will be charged by the United States Park Police with investigative support from the Secret Service, Guglielmi said. “I was walking home from my run on the mall and went through the barricade maybe 20 seconds before they hit the first time,” a witness, who posted video of the alleged incident, told Fox on Twitter. “After they rammed it the second time I decided it was time to get the hell out of there.” | |

| U.S default is possible this Friday.
Treasury has $60 billion left.
If spending continues at current elevated pace, the balance will be NEGATIVE $18 billion by Friday.

| The real cost of a Treasury default isn't that the economy will crash and unemployment rise, it's that interest rates on Treasury securities will be higher FOREVER. This will cost taxpayers billions of dollars per year FOREVER. And for nothing.
Think about it this way. Suppose you default on your mortgage for some reason. If you can ever get another mortgage, you will pay a higher interest rate to compensate the bank for the risk that you might default again. Same with the Treasury.

Get up to speed on the US debt drama
| When will the government run out of cash?
It’s a moving target.
The US actually exceeded its borrowing authority back in January, but Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen authorized “extraordinary measures” – essentially moving money around – to give lawmakers time to act.
She has said those extraordinary measures will be exhausted as soon as June 1, but third-party estimates suggest it could end up taking weeks or even months longer. ...
CNN’s Tami Luhby writes that if the US can limp to the middle of June, an expected infusion of estimated tax payments could forestall the so-called X date until later in the summer. Treasury officials might not even know until a day or two before the X date occurs. | | | When would a default start to really hurt?
Nearly every economist and policy maker agrees that a sustained default would have catastrophic consequences for the US economy and for the many millions of Americans who rely on Social Security, Medicare, government paychecks or government help.
The stock market could lose a large portion of its value if investors were spooked by the instability.
But a default of a day or two might not seem quite as horrible, particularly if there were not any interruption in government services.
Any default would have consequences. If investors no longer trusted the US government to pay its bills, the cost of the government borrowing money could rise – particularly if credit-rating agencies downgrade America’s sterling credit rating. That’s what happened in 2011 in the lead-up to the last significant debt ceiling standoff, increasing the amount America had to pay to make good on its debt obligations. | | | The debt, which is largely owned by the public, pension funds, insurance companies and, to a lesser extent, foreign governments, is considered a safe form of investment and an important backbone of the economy. If America fails to pay its debt holders on time, that trust could be forever eroded.

| The Missouri teen accused of driving a U-Haul into bollards near the White House expressed admiration for Nazis and stated that he wanted to “get to the White House, seize power, and be put in charge of the nation,” according to an affidavit from a Secret Service officer.
Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, is accused of ramming a rented truck into barricades near the White House on Tuesday morning. He was arrested at the scene, where police allegedly found a Nazi flag in the back of his truck. A statement by a Secret Service officer, submitted alongside Kandula’s arrest warrant, states that Kandula told law enforcement about his admiration for Adolf Hitler.
Kandula did not have explosives or weapons in the U-Haul when he was arrested, according to the Secret Service statement. He told agents that he’d planned an attack on the White House for six months, as part of a bid to “seize power,” the statement says.

Amanda Gorman: "The Hill We Climb"
When day comes, we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade.
We've braved the belly of the beast.
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace.
And the norms and notions
of what just is, isn't always just-ice.
And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it.
Somehow we do it.
Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn't broken,
but simply unfinished.
We, the successors of a country and a time
where a skinny Black girl
descended from slaves and raised by a single mother
can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one.
And yes, we are far from polished,
far from pristine,
but that doesn't mean
we are striving to form a union that is perfect.
We are striving to forge our union with purpose.
To compose a country, committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man.
And so we lift our gaze, not to what stands between us
but what stands before us.
We close the divide because we know to put our future first,
we must first put our differences aside.
We lay down our arms
so we can reach out our arms
to one another.
We seek harm to none and harmony for all.
Let the globe, if nothing else, say, this is true:
That even as we grieved, we grew.
That even as we hurt, we hoped.
That even as we tired, we tried.
That we'll forever be tied together, victorious.
Not because we will never again know defeat,
but because we will never again sow division.
Scripture tells us to envision
that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
and no one shall make them afraid.
If we're to live up to our own time,
then victory won't lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we've made.
That is the promise to glade
The hill we climb.
If only we dare
It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit.
It's the past we step into
and how we repair it.
We've seen a force that would shatter our nation, rather than share it.
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.
And this effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed,
it can never be permanently defeated.
In this truth,
in this faith we trust
For while we have our eyes on the future,
history has its eyes on us.
This is the era of just redemption.
We feared at its inception
We did not feel prepared to be the heirs
of such a terrifying hour,
but within it, we found the power
to author a new chapter.
To offer hope and laughter to ourselves.
So while once we asked,
how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?
We will not march back to what was,
but move to what shall be
a country that is bruised but whole
benevolent, but bold,
fierce, and free.
We will not be turned around
or interrupted by intimidation
because we know our inaction and inertia
will be the inheritance of the next generation.
Our blunders become their burdens,
but one thing is certain.
If we merged mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy, and change our children's birthright.
So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with
Every breath, my bronze-pounded chest.
We will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one.
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the West.
We will rise from the windswept Northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution.
We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states.
We will rise from the sunbaked South.
We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
and every known nook of our nation.
And every corner called our country.
Our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful.
When day comes, we step out of the shade
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there was always light.
If only we're brave enough to see it.
If only we're brave enough to be it.
