| I must admit I've only been to Dubai once some years back, but as an urban enthusiast I've followed developments in the city closely for many years. There are a few things I was a little surprised weren't brought up in the video. Sorry for the long read to follow:
1. The artificial islands are not doing well development-wise
As seen in the video, one of the palm islands (Palm Jumeirah) is packed tightly with suburban homes, but the other two are barren. Palm Jebel Ali was shown for a second (4:49) and it was said "it will be more of the same", but actually it has laid dormant for over a decade now. Dredging work was finished right in time for the financial crisis, but the island has nothing on it. The video was tantalizingly close to pointing out why too. A quick look at Google Maps shows it lies on the far outskirts of the city, right next to the industrial container port, and to get there you have to pass through industrial areas. In other words, it's in the middle of nowhere, downwind of the noisy and smelly parts of the city. Not really prime real estate, especially in the city with such a surplus of luxury apartments on offer (more on that in a bit).
The third palm, Palm Deira, was cancelled in 2008, and those islands (Deira Islands) seen at 5:00 is all that was built. As you can see, it hasn't got much on it either, presumably because it's such a hassle to connect to the road network. Deira Islands are also particularly troubled by erosion. After all, they are made of sand.
Oh, and The World islands are a right royal mess. They are piles of sand out in the sea, with no road access, nor electricity or plumbing. The channels between islands are about a metre deep. The only development built on them for many years was a noisy night club, now someone has bought several islands to build a hotel too. But the place is not attractive at all, and erosion is playing havoc on it. The promised cluster of private islands each with a luxury mansion on them seems like a pipe dream these days. The World will probably become the subject of some interesting lawsuits once a storm hits the area and washes away half the islands.
2. Oversupply
Dubai grew in a huge construction boom from cirka 2003 to cirka 2009. Lots of people moved in, lots of tourists started coming, lots of people bought apartments. The growth was spectacular, and some developers seem to have thought it would never end. Around 2005, what limited their income was the amount of real estate ready to sell. So even as the market dipped a bit, the developers seemed to think that they should prepare for another boom like 2003-09. And this time, they would stand ready with thousands of luxury apartments, and make all the money in the world. A ridiculous number of apartments, malls, and offices have been built in Dubai, to the point that supply far outstrips demand. They are trying to make 2003-09 come back with lofty promises and spectacular plans, but there's no demand. As a result, all over the city there are half-built and abandoned megaprojects, waiting for a flood of investor money that never showed up.
3. Cityscape
A lot of the land in Dubai has been sold parcel by parcel to developers, each having total control of a couple square kilometers and determining what is built there. They developed it as their own little "bubble", accessible only by a highway ramp or two, and seek to draw tourists to spend time and money there and only there. As a result, the individual areas of the city are spectacularly poorly connected. All arterial roads are highways, there is little public transport, walkability is a joke, and in general the road network seems designed to prevent you from getting anywhere else. Not to mention all the undeveloped lots due to point 2), meaning that even "downtown Dubai" (actually a marketing name for a particularly aggressively developed parcel) has huge empty areas where only the developer, Emaar, is allowed to build anything, and they choose not to.
4. A good downtown after all
The strange thing is, Dubai is not all glamour and glitz. Around the mouth of Dubai Creek, there has been a city for centuries, and it's not too shabby as far as cities go. It has an old-town street grid, vibrant markets, locals bustling about, amenities within walking distance, and generally looks like a place lived-in for generations. On my visit I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was about it, but now I realize how vastly more authentic it felt compared to the glitz of the modern areas. Urban planning-wise, it may not be a masterpiece, but it's certainly worth a look.
Oh, and the poop trucks were mostly a stopgap measure some 12-15 years ago. The city outgrew its sewage system, and upgrading it took longer than building the Burj Khalifa. Eventually, the infrastructure work was completed and the trucks sent to poop truck heaven. Dubai retains all those other problems of development, but at least the plumbing seems to be in order these days. | |

Damn human you're stupid. Ey, die "poop trucks". Was.
