Russia allows patent theft from anyone in ‘unfriendly’ countries | Washington Post >
| Russia has effectively legalized patent theft from anyone affiliated with countries “unfriendly” to it, declaring that unauthorized use will not be compensated.
The decree, issued this week, illustrates the economic war waged around Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as the West levies sanctions and pulls away from Russia’s huge oil and gas industry.
Russian officials have also raised the possibility of lifting restrictions on some trademarks, according to state media, which could allow continued use of brands such as McDonald’s that are withdrawing from Russia in droves.

Russian economy predicted to shrink by 15% this year
|
The Russian economy will shrink by at least 15% this year, according to an assessment from the Institute of International Finance (IIF), a financial services trade group.
The IIF had previously predicted that Moscow's economy would grow by 3% in 2022, but now says that sanctions imposed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine "have led to a drastic and unprecedented tightening in financial conditions, which signals a deep recession".
Experts warned that the decline could be even sharper should there be additional Western boycotts of Russian energy supplies.
Such a move "would drastically impair Russia's ability to import goods and services, deepening the recession," the IIF said.

Polish ambassador to US says sanctions on Moscow should "last for a decade"
Poland’s Ambassador to the United States, Marek Magierowski, told CNN Thursday that sanctions on Russia should “last for a decade, maybe 15 years” following Moscow’s invasion and assault on Ukraine.
Maybe they should last for a decade, maybe 15 years, because I'm afraid we are going to live with Mr. Putin for many years to come,” Magierowski told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an interview.

US says multiple Ukrainian cities encircled
|
The US State Department believes that Russian forces have encircled "multiple" cities after destroying much of their critical infrastructure, spokesman Ned Price has said.
Price did not specify which Ukrainian cities are currently encircled.
In his remarks, Price accused the Russian government of "laying waste" to population centres to "break the will" of Ukrainians.
He added that Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have left residents without water, electricity, food, and medicine. Many people, Price added, have been unable to escape as a result of "relentless bombardments".
In a separate update on Thursday, the UK's Ministry of Defence said that Russia is committing "an increased" number of forces to encircle Ukrainian cities.
"This will reduce the number of forces available to continue their advance and will further slow Russian progress," the Ministry of Defence said.

Canadian sniper reportedly in Ukraine
| An ex-Canadian Army marksman billed as one of the world's deadliest snipers has reportedly arrived in Ukraine to help defend it from the Russian invasion.
The 40-year-old sniper - known only by his nom de guerre, Wali - fought in Afghanistan and is reported to have killed enemy fighters at a distance of two miles (3.2 km) while serving there. The Canadian also claims to have fought alongside Kurdish fighters against the Islamic State in Iraq.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), he is in Ukraine alongside three other former Canadian servicemen.
"I want to help them. It's as simple as that," he told CBC. "People here being bombarded just because they want to be European and not Russian."
Authorities say as many as 20,000 volunteers from dozens of countries have gone to Ukraine to join the fight.
The BBC is unable to independently verify Wali's claims.

Facebook and Instagram to 'temporarily' allow violent speech
| Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has confirmed that it is changing its rules on violent speech in several countries because of the Ukraine invasion.
The company says that it has "temporarily" made allowances for violent speech - for example “death to the Russian invaders” - that would usually break its rules.
Meta said, though, it won’t allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians.
The internal emails discussing the policy were obtained by Reuters, and have not been seen by the BBC.
The Reuters report says that posts that call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko will be allowed in several countries.
The temporary policy change allowing for calls for violence against Russian soldiers applies to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, and Ukraine, according to one email.

Putin will freiwillige Kämpfer unterstützen

Ukraine accuses Russians of bombing Belarus
| Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of bombing Belarusian settlements from Kyiv's airspace on Friday afternoon.
Ukraine's general staff said that border guards had received information that Russian aircraft had taken off from an airfield in Belarus, crossed into Ukrainian air space and then fired at the southern village of Kopani.
In a message posted to Facebook, which appeared to pre-empt the attack, Ukraine's defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov warned Belarusian citizens that Russian forces were preparing the assault.
"According to their criminal intentions, Russian aviation is preparing to hit a series of settlements on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, situated close to the Ukraine-Belarus border. Specifically, they plan to hit Kopani," Reznikov said.
"The purpose of the provocation is to force the current leadership of Belarus into war against Ukraine. Moscow is trying to bind you with blood," he added.
"I guarantee that the Ukrainian army has not planned, does not plan and will not plan any aggressive actions against Belarus."
The attack comes as Ukraine's Deputy Interior Minister Yevheniy Yenin said the Belarusian government has "been doing everything possible to avoid joining this war".

Russia claims to have found evidence of Ukrainian biological weapons clear-up
| Russia's ambassador to the UN has claimed that Moscow's forces have found evidence of an attempt to clear up evidence of biological weapons in Ukraine.
Speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council convened at Russia's request, Vasily Nebenzya claimed that Russian forces had found evidence of a network of "at least 30" biological research labs aimed at strengthening several "lethal diseases".
He said that "very dangerous biological experiments" had been conducted at the sites in co-ordination with the US.
Nebenzya did not provide any evidence for his claims and the UN's disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu has said it is not aware of any biological weapons programme in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the US has called such claims from Russia "laughable", and warns that Russia could use them to justify its own potential use of similar weapons against Ukraine.

A third Russian general has been killed by Ukrainian forces, western officials say
From CNN’s Max Foster and Sarah Dean
| Western officials say a third Russian general has been killed by Ukrainian forces.
He was identified as Major General Andriy Kolesnikov.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense’s website, Kolesnikov was commander of the Eastern Military District.
A western defense official noted for context that only three Russian general staff officers were killed during the whole Syrian conflict and estimated that Russia would maintain a total of 20 generals in theatre in Ukraine at this time.
The official paid tribute to the strength of the Ukrainian resistance, particularly around Kyiv and Mykolaiv, where Russian attempts to circle the cities have been frustrated.
