The newest update from the Institute for the Study of War paints the bleakest picture so far about the prospects for the Russian Army.

Russians facing growing logistics and morale issues, seemed to be bogged down almost everywhere. Only options might be to lash out without any sense.

G7 moves to end normal trade relations with Russia

The joint step, first announced by US president Joe Biden, includes revoking Russia’s “most-favoured nation” status, which allows it to trade goods on preferential terms with many western countries under rules set by the World Trade Organization. The move will lead to higher tariffs on many Russian exports.

The G7 agreed on other measures as well, including stopping Russia from obtaining any financing from international institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank.

The US will now ban key Russian imports including seafood, alcoholic beverages and diamonds, while Brussels announced a block on imports of key iron and steel products.

Russia shells mosque sheltering 80 - Ukraine foreign ministry

Russian forces have shelled a mosque in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, where more than 80 adults and children, including Turkish citizens, have taken refuge, Ukraine's foreign ministry says.

Ukraine has accused Russia of refusing to allow people out of Mariupol, where a blockade has left hundreds of thousands of people trapped.

Russia blames Ukraine for the failure to evacuate.

Ukraine's foreign ministry tweets the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent mosque in Mariupol has been shelled by Russian "invaders".

"More than 80 adults and children are hiding there from the shelling, including citizens of Turkey," it says.

There are no details of any people killed or wounded.

Moscow has denied targeting civilian areas.

The Weakness of the Despot

An expert on Stalin discusses Putin, Russia, and the West.

What is Putinism? It’s not the same as Stalinism. It’s certainly not the same as Xi Jinping’s China or the regime in Iran. What are its special characteristics, and why would those special characteristics lead it to want to invade Ukraine, which seems a singularly stupid, let alone brutal, act?

Yes, well, war usually is a miscalculation. It’s based upon assumptions that don’t pan out, things that you believe to be true or want to be true. Of course, this isn’t the same regime as Stalin’s or the tsar’s, either. There’s been tremendous change: urbanization, higher levels of education. The world outside has been transformed. And that’s the shock. The shock is that so much has changed, and yet we’re still seeing this pattern that they can’t escape from.

You have an autocrat in power—or even now a despot—making decisions completely by himself. Does he get input from others? Perhaps. We don’t know what the inside looks like. Does he pay attention? We don’t know. Do they bring him information that he doesn’t want to hear? That seems unlikely. Does he think he knows better than everybody else? That seems highly likely. Does he believe his own propaganda or his own conspiratorial view of the world? That also seems likely. These are surmises. Very few people talk to Putin, either Russians on the inside or foreigners.

And so we think, but we don’t know, that he is not getting the full gamut of information. He’s getting what he wants to hear. In any case, he believes that he’s superior and smarter. This is the problem of despotism. It’s why despotism, or even just authoritarianism, is all-powerful and brittle at the same time. Despotism creates the circumstances of its own undermining. The information gets worse. The sycophants get greater in number. The corrective mechanisms become fewer. And the mistakes become much more consequential.

If you assumed that the West was just going to fold, because it was in decline and ran from Afghanistan; if you assumed that the Ukrainian people were not for real, were not a nation; if you assumed that Zelensky was just a TV actor, a comedian, a Russian-speaking Jew from Eastern Ukraine—if you assumed all of that, then maybe you thought you could take Kyiv in two days or four days. But those assumptions were wrong.

Streitkräfte & Strategien Tag 16 (11.3.), Min 11:00

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1502673952572854278.html

Why Russian army is so weak? ...

Notwithstanding with its warlike image, boosted by massive PR campaign, Russian military have nearly zero experience of fighting conventional wars against other regular armies. ... Since WWII Russia never fought a conventional war against a regular army. The only exception was Georgia 2008. Russia invaded to support separatist movements in Abkhazia and South Ossetia and defeated tiny Georgian army. That was the closest Russia had to a real war in last 70 y.

...

Let's sum up. Kremlin is not maxing efficiency, it's minimising the threat. Recruit as low IQ officers as possible, give them very narrow training. If some officers are capable and rising quickly, kill them. Appoint as many state security to the army to make it more controllable. To minimise the threat from the army, the ruling state security attacks the army mythos. Why would mafia even dare to racketeer military officers? Because they know in case of conflict the state will back the mafia. These guys stand much higher in Russian hierarchy than soldiers.
This explains all these strange phenomena such as thieves harassing the military bases, soldiers being forced into gay prostitution, etc. I don't think Putin personally ordered that (though he might). But he purposefully destroys the army mythos, to eliminate a rival for power.
...

Conclusions about the Russian artillery-centric army are not wrong. But they must be considered in political context. You must be artillery centric, if you have low morale troops. Nobody respects them, they have no self respect either. They can't stand the close range fight.
If regime trained capable high morale infantry with intelligent officers, it'd constitute a mortal political threat. So it will maintain low morale incapable infantry with the dumbest officers possible and kill brighter ones. Artillery is way to fight *somehow* with these troops.

Russian regime pretends to be military. But it's not. Its thinking, language, methods are very state security. ...
Russian regime is regime of cosplayers: state security agents who pretend to be soldiers and desire the military glory. State security playing soldiers launched a Special Operation and accidentally got into a real war. They're scared.

https://twitter.com/kamilkazani/status/1502723221371731976
That's a real time TV talk between Solovyov and Kedmi - jingoist pundits who always preached Russia would win. They're devastated and can't come up with anything slightly optimistic. Solovyov tells that continuing this operation will lead to Russia's destruction. Watch it all. [with subtitles]

Regime knows they're fucked. Rats are already escaping from the sinking ship in huge numbers. The problem is - the larger ones can't escape, nobody's gonna accept them. Only the small fish can.
Very Orthodox and patriotic MP Milonov escaped to Armenia for example. Same with oligarchs. Bankers Fridman and Aven are sanctioned and can't leave Russia. But most of their top managers already did (reportedly mostly to the US). Oligarchs are doomed, but their henchmen who were prudent enough to get Western visas or residence are leaving en masse.

Now Putin is desperately trying to find new manpower for his war. Here you see Assad's Z-troops in Syria who are reportedly preparing to be transported to Ukraine. ...

Why would Putin need it? Primarily because all the Russian support for Z-campaign is based on assumption, they're not gonna pay for it. If they are, support will disappear quickly. Putin not only denies he sent conscripts to Ukraine, but orders to investigate those who sent them. If Putin admits he's sending conscripts to war, they'll be dodging en masse. So he denies. And that works.

So. This cheered me up. Which was v much needed after those last days. Let's hope @FukuyamaFrancis is right here. Sleep well, everyone.

Preparing for Defeat

I’ll stick my neck out and make several prognostications:

1. Russia is heading for an outright defeat in Ukraine. Russian planning was incompetent, based on a flawed assumption that Ukrainians were favorable to Russia and that their military would collapse immediately following an invasion. Russian soldiers were evidently carrying dress uniforms for their victory parade in Kyiv rather than extra ammo and rations. Putin at this point has committed the bulk of his entire military to this operation—there are no vast reserves of forces he can call up to add to the battle. Russian troops are stuck outside various Ukrainian cities where they face huge supply problems and constant Ukrainian attacks.

2. The collapse of their position could be sudden and catastrophic, rather than happening slowly through a war of attrition. The army in the field will reach a point where it can neither be supplied nor withdrawn, and morale will vaporize. This is at least true in the north; the Russians are doing better in the south, but those positions would be hard to maintain if the north collapses.

3. There is no diplomatic solution to the war possible prior to this happening. There is no conceivable compromise that would be acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine given the losses they have taken at this point.
...

6. The cost that Ukraine is paying is enormous, of course. But the greatest damage is being done by rockets and artillery, which neither MiGs nor a no-fly zone can do much about. The only thing that will stop the slaughter is defeat of the Russian army on the ground.

7. Putin will not survive the defeat of his army. He gets support because he is perceived to be a strongman; what does he have to offer once he demonstrates incompetence and is stripped of his coercive power?
...

9. The war to this point has been a good lesson for China. Like Russia, China has built up seemingly high-tech military forces in the past decade, but they have no combat experience. The miserable performance of the Russian air force would likely be replicated by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, which similarly has no experience managing complex air operations. We may hope that the Chinese leadership will not delude itself as to its own capabilities the way the Russians did when contemplating a future move against Taiwan.

https://twitter.com/PhillipsPOBrien/status/1502732464980172802

Logistics Rule--look at the map. You might be wondering why the Russian invasion of Ukraine looks like a group of almost equidistant road-linked thrusts stretching from Russian and Belarus into Ukraine. ...

Turning to this War on the Rocks piece, it is said that the average Russian unit has a truck lift to take it to 90 miles (140km) from the closest large supply dump (see below). You would have to double the trucks on hand to get to 180 miles. ...
Indeed, most Russian thrusts seem to have stopped dead after going forward something close to the original 140km. Even after 16 days of war, they are having great difficulties getting units beyond that distance from their home supply dumps.

This, btw, is directly the opposite of what the Russians should be doing according to their doctrine--which is to be fast moving to exploit openings, and adjusting flexibly to the opportunities allowed by battle. What we see is the opposite of this. Mostly short, equidistant thrusts, with a few, slow, halting longer movements which are taking much longer to occur than the Russians would like.

The Russian campaign seems to be being controlled by logistic limitations, severely restricted by Ukrainian attacks on their trucks. Logistics rule because they limit.

Institute for the study of war daily report, Ukrainian attacks in the northeast are causing Russian problems. Btw these attacks to the northeast threaten the supplies of the long Russian attack from Sumy to Kyiv. The most precarious supply line

Moscow’s Stock Market to Remain Frozen for Third Week

The Moscow Exchange said Saturday the country’s main stock market will stay closed next week, through March 18. The stock market hasn’t opened since Feb. 25, the day after the invasion and just before the West unveiled a punishing round of sanctions on Russia’s financial system.

The suspension delays what is likely to be a painful reckoning for investors in Russian stocks. While trading in Russia has been halted, shares of Russian companies listed in international markets such as London and New York have plunged. Companies in Russia are likely to face a major hit as the economy reels from the effects of war with Ukraine, including sanctions, the pullout of Western investors and disruptions to supply chains and difficulty importing critical parts and materials.

Bermuda Delists Russian Jets in Setback for Foreign Owners >

Bermuda’s Civil Aviation Authority removed all aircraft tied to Russia from its airworthiness registry, exposing hundreds of jetliners owned by foreign leasing firms to devaluation.

“International sanctions on the aviation sector have had a significant impact on the ability to sustain safety oversight on Russian-operated aircraft,” the authority said on its website. The agency said it’s “unable to confidently approve these aircraft as being airworthy.”

The move is likely to accelerate decisions by leasing firms that have rented out Boeing Co. and Airbus SE jetliners to Aeroflot PJSC and other Russian airlines to cancel the contracts. Irish lessors have until March 28 to do so under European Union sanctions tied to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia has already started moving planes to its local registry from Bermuda.

About 740 Russian aircraft are registered on the island, according to Bernews, which reported the action earlier. Bermuda’s aviation authority performs an essential role in assuring planes in Russia are insured and maintained to confirm their airworthiness. Without it, the jets can’t be marketed later to airlines elsewhere in the world, and lose their value.

https://twitter.com/AlexInAir/status/1502933647783043080

Bermuda revokes the licenses of 745 Russian aircraft (that’s 50% of Russia’s airline fleet).
Note: Majority of aircraft flying for Russian airlines are registered in Bermuda for tax avoidance.
...

In addition - foreign leasing companies want their jets back from Russia by 28 March.

Russian airlines “simply not answering the phone” one lessor tells me, as they prepare to ‘write off’ dozens of multi-million dollar airline jets that could be “essentially gone for good”
