| A few thoughts on the current course of the war. The Russian offensive grinds on in the Donbas. Both sides have made incremental gains, neither is near collapse, but equally, both lack the forces for a major breakthrough. Thread. (Will use some of Nathan's maps)
...
The Russian goal in Donbas is likely to setup a battle for Slovyansk/Kramatorsk, with an axis of advance from Izyum and another from the east, assuming they were able to get past Bakhmut. This objective appears aspirational at best.
The offensive in this part of the battlefield is likely to drag on, perhaps well into July or August. Though both sides are liable to become exhausted due to losses of manpower and materiel.
...
Around Kherson, west of the river, UA forces have made steady gains eating away at Russian positions & inching a bit closer to the city. The battle lines are more fluid here, and Russian forces are the most spread out in these positions. (Yellow UA gains, Purple RU per Nathan)
Kherson is where a future UA counter offensive could play out. Despite the present focus on the Donbas, economically and strategically Kherson is more significant, and it is where UA ability to conduct offensive operations will likely be tested in the future.
The battle over Donbas is important but not especially decisive for Ukraine. UA has sought to exhaust Russian forces there by forcing attritional fights over cities/towns, while making localized counter attacks along other parts of the front.
...
The general lack of force availability (on both sides) has forced this into an attrition war. The Russian military holds a substantial advantage in fires, although not a dramatic advantage in manpower and materiel, hence a lack of momentum in operations.
Despite the focus on the map, who advanced at what rate, etc. the more important question is how the fighting affects the two forces & their prospects for sustaining the war. Gains may be small, but losses on both sides in a battle high.
Russian forces are increasingly dependent on mobilized manpower from LDNR, Wagner ChVK, volunteers & reserve battalions manned by recently contracted servicemen. These units now absorb the bulk of the attrition. Fighting for Severodonetsk was largely by LNR mobilized units. The Russian mil is using LDNR as dismounted infantry, and trying to cobble the rest together (VDV, Motor rifle units, Wagner formations) into groups capable of offensive maneuver. They shift more capable forces around the battlefield to attempt localized advances.
On the UA side, significant losses in recent months have led to a growing dependence on territorial defense forces and lower quality replacements. However, the situation does not suggest UA forces are anywhere near collapse in the Donbas. Ukrainian discourse in recent weeks had begun to paint a bleak picture in part to motivate faster delivery of Western military aid. UA is in a capability trench, low on ammunition, with losses mounting, in need of artillery & MLRS to attain some parity in an attrition war.
HIMARS will allow UA to conduct strikes at tactical-operational depths, hitting Russian logistics & C2. But this capability is being provided in installments and the impact could be greatest when it is first introduced, before Russian forces attempt to adapt.
This phase of the war will probably drag on into the summer. Costs on both sides are mounting, unsustainable casualties may lead to an operational pause in the coming months. That will still see a relatively dynamic battlefield rather than a stalemate (this is a guestimate).
Overall, local mil balance in Donbas favors Russia, but long term trends still favor Ukraine. However, that estimate is conditional on sustained Western military assistance, and is not necessarily predictive of outcomes. This is likely to be a protracted war.
I will follow up with a thread on force quality and availability. This strikes me as the more important question to examine. There are issues with degradation of force quality on both sides, and adaptations taking place that will shape the course of the war.
I'll add that at this rate Russian gains in the Donbas are likely to be limited chiefly to Luhansk oblast, i.e. I'm skeptical of RU ability to press into Slovyansk/Kramatorsk. If sufficiently armed, UA should be able to generate forces for its own offensive in a later phase.

Demnach liefern beide Länder jeweils drei Panzerhaubitzen. Lambrecht erklärte, damit gehe sie an die absolute Grenze dessen, was verantwortbar sei.

Nein, nein.

| Russia's murderous strike on a shopping mall in Kremenchuk has rightly been condemned as a crime, but was it also a mistake, as Tallyrand might have said? I think there's a case for arguing it was both, due to the bad choices Russia made. A short 🧵.
First bad choice: Russia reportedly used two long-range Kh-22 missiles. This is a frankly ancient 6.5 ton weapon, first fielded in 1962 - 60 years ago! - to hit NATO aircraft carriers and battleships with a 1,000 kg warhead or a 350–1,000 kt nuclear weapon. ... However, they are very inaccurate in ground use. According to Ukrainian presidential advisor Oleksii Arestovych, they have a circular error probable of 200-300m (600-900ft). That is to say, they will hit within 200-300m of their nominal target.
Second bad choice: the target itself. Russia appears to have been trying to target the Kremash machine plant. But the plant is right in the middle of the city, surrounded by civilian infrastructure and housing. The Amstor shopping centre is just to the south of the plant.
Let's overlay the approximately 300m circular error probable (CEP) onto the plant, assuming that the aiming point is right in the middle of the complex. It covers the entire plant - but also the shopping mall.
Let's compare this to the impact sites, as plotted by @TheBaseLeg. As we can see, they are both within or very close to the CEP radius.
The hit on the shopping mall was almost certainly unintentional, but the use of such an inaccurate weapon made it more likely. If it hadn't been the mall, it could just as easily have been the civilian buildings to the east or west of the plant.
To make a comparison, suppose Russia had used a modern 3M-54 Kalibr missile with a claimed 50m CEP to carry out the attack. It could have hit individual factory buildings with a relatively low risk of collateral damage.
But it chose to use Kh-22s instead. Why? Most likely because it's running short on Kalibrs, and its commanders likely don't particularly care about risks to civilians. So for want of care and a lack of accurate missiles, dozens are now likely dead.

| We finally can visually confirm that US-supplied M142 HIMARS are currently used for strikes deep into Russian-controlled territories - fragments of M31A1 GMLRS unitary rocket were found after a target was hit in Perevalsk, #Luhansk Oblast, 45 km from the front line.
| | | > The contract number (W31P4Q-14-C-0066) on the third shard is actually the 20 December 2013 shared order of 1,824 M31A1 GMLRS for the 🇮🇹 Italian Army, the US Marine Corps, and US Army. | |

| A little goes a long way thread. In the last 7 days according to @arestovych the Ukr military has destroyed 16 RU ammo dumps using Tochka and HIMARS. 4 in Luhansk and 12 in Donetsk.
I remember when people doubted that HIMARS would be a “game changer” and mocked the fact that initially 4 were being sent. I too criticized the decision to send 4 until I realized that the US had taken the same approach with the M777. At first 18 and then 96 plus.
Well HIMARS is now allowing Ukr to make precise strikes on high value targets. Once those are taken out ie CPs and Ammo dumps I’m sure air defenses will be degraded so that Bayrakters can take out other targets such as MLRS and long range arty. The ability for HIMARS and TB2s to take out long range arty allows Ukr to use western SPGs with impunity. This is what will happen over the next 4 weeks. The long range strike capabilities of the Ukrs are improving while those of the RU are starting to be degraded. Now RU has cruise and ballistic missiles but as soon as Ukr air defenses are upgraded with NASAMS that will change too.
So the Ukrs must stay the course:
1-take out CPs and Ammo dumps
2-target RU SAM sites
3-use Bayrakter and HIMARS to knock out RU long range MLRS/Arty
4-once the above is done in sequence use concentration of HIMARS, Bayrakters, M777s and SPGs to obliterate RU defensive strong points so that Ukr offensives meet little resistance. The above campaign should last about 5 weeks. By August Ukrs will have cleared the way for them to go on the offensive with little Russian resistance.
