| I'm trying not to lap up every rumor circulating around Telegram, but the main challenge in establishing a clear picture of the situation in Kharkiv appears to be that Russian lines are collapsing faster than Ukraine can even advance and clear liberated areas. Astonishing.
One imagines even those Russian forces willing and organized to resist will inevitably find themselves outflanked, at risk of being cut off and forced to retreat. Occupying forces appear threadbare throughout. A dynamic that will be hard to backstop.
If the Izyum axis properly disintegrates that would be a dramatic defeat for the Russian forces - a possible turning point in the war. Some videos show Ukrainians bringing up mobile air defenses and long range artillery which will reach well beyond the Oskil...
So far events seem to have mostly born out what I thought as was the most likely outcome of a second Russian offensive in the Donbas: Over stretch despite limited success, with no plausible theory of victory, eventually inviting local collapse.
Important to maintain perspective: This is a local success on an apparently under-resourced front. But it does reverse the overall dynamic and - if it holds - will surely deny Russia its Donbas breakthru. Maybe they'll rally, but again: towards what end?
And all-importantly: This offensive is proof of concept. Ukraine can re-conquer its territory thru deft tactics, smart use of modern weapons, and advantages in morale and cohesion. This encourages Western partners to keep the aid flowing. There is a path.

| Achtung Panzer!, Kharkiv Front 🧵
This is what successful armored warfare looks like. There are many aspects to what appears to have made this operation work & I'd like to briefly go over a few of them. We'll start from the top & work our way down.
... [Thread] ...
Russian units in the area of advance have not yet been able to reform coherently enough to mount an effective defense.
Those areas (primarily urban) where Russian troops have held together have, correctly, been bypassed by UAF spearhead units. Pocketed & isolated, these Russians are/will likely be surrounded & compelled to surrender in short order. The UAF has placed primacy on speed & violence of action so as not to slow down their assault units & allow the Russians time to recover.
...
Going forward: the butchers bill for Russian forces from this operation is unlikely to be low in either man or materiel, neither of which they can afford. UAF losses are likely to be substantial, but less than would be expected given the swift collapse of RU forward units.
If the UAF can keep them on their heels until their own planned halt points are reached, it will climb higher.
The danger for the UAF will be overextension. They will be tempted to continue on once reaching their own pre-planned stop lines, given RU performance. This must be resisted. The UAF will need time to reorganize, refit, consolidate its lines of supply & communication, deal with rear-area holdouts, & then ready itself for a fresh offensive. Given its performance to date, I am optimistic this concern will be heeded.
In the back of every good analyst's mind for 7 months has been at least one question: "What will Ukraine look like on offense?"
We're finding out. They're giving us all a hell of a show on their 1st time out.
Addition: This is almost moving faster than I can write it. There are now (thank you to those who directed me to them) reports that UAF units are hitting Izium from the south with heavy fighting within the city limits. The entire tenor of the war in the east has changed.
| |

| The last 48 hours have seen quite a lot happening in #Ukraine. While the southern offensive continues, the Ukrainian operations around Kharkiv have achieved a significant penetration of Russian defences on the Kupiansk-Izium axis. What might this mean?
... [Thread] ...
It is clear that the Ukrainians have achieved surprise against the Russians in the #Kharkiv region. The Ukrainians attacked what appears to have been a thinly defended area and have achieved a significant penetration into Russian rear areas. That they were able to exploit this opportunity indicates that Ukraine maintained a significant mobile operational reserve, containing combined arms teams supported by fires and logistics.
And once again, the Ukrainians have been able to pull off a good operational level deception plan. While the focus was on the south, they assembled and launched an operation in the north. Kudos (again) to Ukrainian leaders and planners.
...
The Ukrainian advance deep into the Russian-held areas of Ukraine in the north will demand that Russia rush reinforcements here - potentially impacting their ability to defend parts of the south. Perhaps the new Russian 3rd Army Corps is an option?
The shifting of Russian forces means they can’t be used while moving between different parts of the country. This redeployment of forces will also create other weaknesses and opportunities that the Ukrainians can exploit.
Potentially, we could see cascading Russian tactical withdrawals and failures in various regions as a consequence. This is, having a superior tempo to the enemy and a rapid identification and exploitation of opportunities, is the essence of operational art. ...
The Ukrainians will be going through a lot of fuel and ammo, but these offensives are the kinds of operations for which good military organisations stockpile for well in advance (and the Ukrainians are good). Deception has been central to all Ukrainian preparations for this phase of the war. The Ukrainians have obviously taken care to quietly stockpile military resources and place units in reserve to be able exploit opportunities like what has occurred in the north.
There are likely to be significant Russian material losses in the north, given the speed of the Ukrainian advance. Overrunning Russian supply depots (especially with artillery ammo and fuel) will further hurt the Russians and help Ukraine.
We might also see large numbers of Russian prisoners in the north. Not only are these hard to replace, given Russian recruiting problems, it is a strategic influence coup for Ukraine. And a real problem for Putin.
This #Kharkiv offensive also represents an excellent marriage of operational art and military strategy. Operationally, the Ukrainians are sequencing, prioritising and adapting their tactical battles across time and geography to meet strategic objectives.
Strategically, the Ukrainians continue to implement their strategy of corrosion, which attacks Russia at their weak points, and destroys their logistics, C2, and morale to corrode front line forces from within.
Clearly there are tactical and operational risks. A Russian counterattack might ‘pinch off’ the penetration & isolate the advancing Ukrainians. But the Russians need to move quick to do this, have sufficient reserves, as well as defend other areas on exterior lines.
But as we have seen so far in this war, the Ukrainian command philosophy of delegation and exploiting opportunities is superior to the Russian more centralised, plodding method. It will be hard (not impossible) for Russia to respond to the current Ukrainian operational tempo.
The Russians, while not beaten, are in real trouble at the moment. Because of this, we should watch for some unexpected reaction from Putin. He has shown no signs of wanting to pull back from this invasion.
And lest we get too triumphalist, we should remember that Luhansk and large parts of Donetsk and southern #Ukraine remain occupied by the Russians. Subsequent Ukrainian offensives will be necessary to clear these areas.
Despite all this, we must give the Ukrainians their due. There is a way to go, but they have achieved surprise, deceived the enemy about their intentions and conducted a series of offensives that have thrown the Russians onto the back foot.
Ukraine probably now has the initiative as well as tactical and operational momentum going into the winter. The war is far from over, but perhaps the tide is finally turning. End.

Their army isn’t just losing unexpectedly - it’s proving to be an unprofessional, ridiculous, constantly humiliated band of criminals.
it’s exactly what bloodthirsty chauvinist ghouls deserve. no glory, no respect even in defeat. just scorn and exposure as the pathetic lot of thieves and rapists that they are. go back home and figure out how to get a washing machine that isn’t covered with the blood of innocents.

| ⚡️The counteroffensive plan in the Kharkiv Region was developed by Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyі - an expert.
According to Oleksiy Holobutskyi, it was Syrskyi who planned the surprise attack on Balaklia, the necessity of which was initially criticized by the General Staff. However, he managed to convince the country's military leadership of the need for such a plan.
Today's successes in the counteroffensive according to Sirskyi's plan open up new possibilities in terms of further displacement of the enemy's positions.
