Mal gucken.

They are abandoning the scheme completely now that mobilisation is in force.
“Prigozhin will either be arrested or in an accident”
Correction: Their placement with the VDV is most likely to minimise desertions - @VDV_Textbooks recently talked about them being used as barrier troops for demoralised Russian infantry. So not integrating with the unit directly. | |

| Been talking to families of conscriptable men all day. Unfortunately this is Feb22 all over again. Massive denial and cognitive dissonance and little media coverage of anything beyond the abstract phrase "partial mobilization". That first word seems to key to magical thinking.
Partial =частичная : 'of a part'. Some distant/vague part. People imagine a huge army and reserve that is just lying around for the govt to mobilize.
The reality is that in my village they already handed papers to the only man in 20s today.
The local priest told me. He was a veteran conscript sapper. I don't have info on his views but like many he seems to be resigned to obeying orders. It would be cowardly and risk big loss of social status to somehow draft dodge.
There's not even a 'my country right or wrong'. Media consumption still key: All his relatives consume only mainstream media. They still don't see it as anything other than heroic and limited action against evil. Minimal risks. Big benefits.
'we're winning' his mom told me. 'it's not long to wait now. We have the energy weapon. Look at Italy!' A man in his 60s. 'Italy like in WWI will realise they're on the wrong side!' Everyone I speak to raises the wonder-weapon topic: 'is it true your governments will fall because of lack of our gas?'
I very calmly say 'No, there is a high degree of consensus on supporting Ukraine'.
Like I wrote last few days: this is the only way I can break the spell, but it's only momentary. Even academic colleagues who in Feb though it utter folly and tragedy are hardening their views and also reaching for the magic thought: 'what if econ pain can divide our enemies?'
So I still stand by my thesis of continuing "Defensive Consolidation". See this post from a while back: ...
The long and the short: things move so slowly with total control of the public sphere. People not already informed are not as susceptible to the "sarafan radio" (rumour) as before because this is a society already frog-boiled dry.
Yes people in Dagestan and elsewhere can leverage ethnic cohesion and alternative sources of authority to resist but this so far is not scalable.
Also there was big school shooting. this and elections in Italy, Referenda, anf repeats of Lavrov at the UN are the news stories.
There's a story about those drafted keeping their work places but this is craftily presented via the zoom conference of the PM and other technocrat ministers. Most people turn off and don't understand the underlying significance.
So like in the past with targeted repression of opposition, mobilization works by targeting 'easy' and 'disarmed' victims. Including those naifs who would not want to be subject to social sanctions of their community (opposite of Dagestan).
I can't overstate the spellbinding power of media presentation of "special operation" by prof army. 'Leonid Viktorovich' my oldest informant has a son, 38 in the 'reserve' list as radio operator... 'Why draft him? They don't need people like that' is his self-reassuring comment.
Are you sure Leonid V? Once more we have Schrödinger's war paradox. Simultaneously a limited and distant special operation AND an existential world war to destroy Russian civilization. No one willingly lifts the lid of the box to look inside so Russians are able to believe both.
If 300k do get mobilized (which is a tall order) then maybe the war becomes more real. Whether this is good or bad is hard to say. Thought for another time: 'instead of writing off Russian public we desperately need efforts to open channels of quality alternative info.

| Depressing prediction: after a few days of turmoil and protest, things will die down in Russia. The flow of men leaving will stop. People will be mobilized and sent to the front, just as underprepared as those already there. They won’t revolt en masse.
A few will surrender. We’ll get very excited and say that heralds the downfall of the Russian state. But the rest will do what they’re told.
We’re making a *lot* of excited guesses about regime stability and consequences based on a wave of social media virality created mostly by those in the West.
This is the MO of Putin’s state: clumsy, messy, controversial, but somehow always bungles through problems thanks to its media networks and enthusiastic supporters.
If change comes, it’s certainly not coming from below. Those boys being herded onto planes and buses don’t look desperate to seize any chance to make their escape.

Anti-mobilisation protests spread in Russia | FT
| Men seeking to escape being drafted rush to borders with Georgia, Finland, Kazakhstan and Mongolia
Protests across Russia continued over the weekend against President Vladimir Putin’s decision to mobilise the armed forces’ reserves, in the starkest sign of popular discontent since he ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February.
Locals in Dagestan, an impoverished, mostly Muslim region in the mountainous North Caucasus, blocked off a highway and clashed with police as they chanted “No to war!”, according to videos posted on social media by local activists.
The unrest, which comes as public opposition to the war has been outlawed and made punishable with up to 15 years in prison, points to widespread anger at Putin’s decision to call up hundreds of thousands of men into the Russian army, its first military mobilisation since the second world war.
