Insgesamt sind drei Stränge betroffen. Beide Stränge von #NordStream2 und ein Strang von #NordStream1. Macht also 3*177 = 531 Mio m3 #Methan.

'Honestly, they're all going to die' What Russian soldiers who have already fought in Ukraine think about Putin's mobilization effort | Meduza
| Meduza asked Russians who have already taken part in the country’s war against Ukraine — as contract soldiers and mercenaries — to tell us what they think of the mobilization effort. | | | Kirill, contract soldier
If I’m being honest, they’re all going to die there. They'll be mutilated and killed. This isn’t a trained army! I, for example, served [as a contract soldier] for a long time, then chose to go [to the front in Ukraine] myself — and I still found myself unprepared. The very first day, I realized I had made the biggest mistake of my life. ...
I’ve served more than a few times, and I can tell when I’m being sent in for slaughter. And I immediately told this guy with big epaulets to fuck off: “I’m not just a bargaining chip! I’m a soldier for the Russian army! You can’t just throw me under the bus like this!” To which he answered, “You’re all just cannon fodder. You’re the third group of people to form this battalion. Do you know where the first two groups died? And you’ll die here.” Then he told my commander, “Send in the meat." [Us.]
They were trying to advance, and they threw us at a Ukrainian stronghold, where tanks, artillery, and machine guns were all operating. And the Ukrainians had hundreds of troops, while we only had 40. ...
When I look at [the people being mobilized now], I see myself three months ago. But I don’t have any sympathy for them. If you have a choice, choose life! Sure, it might be life in prison; sure, the state will consider you a criminal — for you’ll know you’re not a criminal. You won’t kill anybody. You won’t shoot anybody.
We’re the fascists — really. We’re the fascists. There’s not another word for it. There really is a denazification happening in Ukraine right now — not for Ukraine, but for us.
| | | Anatoly, mercenary
I don’t understand what this crowd of people is going to achieve. If we, the professionals, got our asses whipped out there, what do they think they’re going to do? The best case scenario is that they stay in the reserves [in the Donbas]. The worst is that they die a hero’s death. Two options. ... These [newly drafted] IT guys and other cannon fodder — what are they going to do? They won’t change anything [at the front] and they won’t solve anything.
| | | Chingiz, contract soldier
This [mobilization] is evidence that the army’s been defeated. And they’re conscripting anyone and everyone. A lot of people don’t understand, but that’s how it is: Russia’s professional army has been destroyed over the last six months — and now they’re conscripting the entire reserve.
I was a contract soldier myself — and [even] we were given inadequate training. The photo reports [of the training] are one thing — but the results [at the front] showed that it was all a Potemkin village.
Even we had huge losses. And now it’s just a crowd of people who were given a form. [...] What difference are they going to make [on the frontline]? They’re just going to die for nothing. These are just civilians who did their [mandatory] military service at some point.

| 🇷🇺 Lots of pictures & videos of not-quite-young men being drafted in the "partial mobilization".
Why? Well, cohort of 20-29-year-olds is VERY small. "Normally" they would be the backbone of any military. But not in 2022 in Russia.

| Good point. Late 30s/40s men who either served or got deferment are core to my sociological research. They know the state is coming for them hence those without ties leave.
However most do have ties. Mortgages, families. I wrote before, social sanctions (anthropologically - basically being thought ill of by your community) are strongly for 'accepting the call' even while simultaneously strongly disapproving of the war. These things are compatible.
Nonetheless this situation is not sustainable. Which is why I tell all my informants to "тянуть время" :delay and avoid. Unfortunately there is still fatalism. This will rapidly change when more informal reports filter back of mistreated new draftees. ...
I believe that the draft will be sabotaged from within (with a delay) at the local level. Over time we may see enlistment officers avoid areas where there is effective local resistance and firms that make a stand to protect employees.
But I also think the economic impact of draft might be more significant in getting it reversed. Demographics as the QT shows are precarious in Russia. Even before war there were deep shortages of qualified technical specialists in industry. As I've written about extensively.
So one could see something that echoes Soviet period, larger enterprises hoarding qualified labour both formally (getting official exemptions) and informally (that guy don't work here any more officer).
Remember that the Russian state is afraid of getting its hands dirty and like with Covid has delegated the draft (partially) to the regions. This sets in play a host of conflicts. Regional elites depend on qualified labour for their rent seeking (e.g. construction).

| About "referendums" in #Ukraine. Many have asked, why #Russia even makes the effort to stage "#referendums", which look so fake to any Western country.
But let's go back a bit and look at the #Baltic states under Soviet occupation. 🧵
- In Baltic states we know this "referendum"-play very well: the USSR occupied Baltic states through performances that bears similarities to these "referendums".
- As a result in my textbooks in #Finland there was no word about occupation, but I was told how Balts "joined" happily to the family of Soviet republics. This is what Finnish curriculum taught at school a decade after decade. It affected the way Finnish public debate formed over the years. #finlandisation
- For Russia it's crucial to have photos and videos about the "referendums". This visual material will be used in Russian media and education now and in the future. As long as the constitution of Russia is not changed (patriotism!) and there is no free speech, this fake narrative stays the dominant one.
- In Baltic states under the Soviet occupation the school curriculum followed the Soviet narrative. The Soviet media/education in occupied territories used the picture material from staged elections a decade after decade. #brainwashing #homosovieticus
- Now the same kind of material from Ukraine is used to create the new generation of #homoputinicus
- Even though Russian propaganda is not successful in Western countries, for now, please remember that two thirds of the world is much more welcoming to the Russian disinformation. The "evidence" about "referendums" offers excellent material to spread the Kremlin narrative. In Russia-friendly countries the Kremlin narration will dominate, again a decade after decade.
- The staged propaganda material from the USSR was successful in the West and it did affect, how former Soviet countries were seen in the West even after the collapse of the USSR.
- The fake elections and referendums created the narrative supporting the idea of "happy joining" to the happy Soviet family which was much more appealing to Western leaders than the reality of the occupation and the crimes committed by the USSR. The "happy" narrative gave a perfect excuse to trade with the occupier, to shake hands with the occupier, to greet them with kisses. Good optics!
- In the West, the "happy" narrative created by the USSR played a role in making the idea of "Russia's "natural spheres of influence" seem more natural, more justified. This is the message that will go through now in two thirds of the world.
- When asked why are you fighting here, Russian soldiers have said to Ukrainians: "We want you to be with us." This sentence and idea reflects what they have been taught at school and by their media, a decade after decade, about "countries joining happily to the USSR". If you have not heard about the reality of the occupation, the fake story of "happy reunion" will go through, and this is why RU needs the fake material from the fake referendums.
- The most obvious reason for "referendums" is to make the occupation legit according to the Russian legal system. When the territory is under Russian law, Ukrainians liberating their territory from the Russian occupation, are considered attacking Russian soil.
