| The government is on the brink of a U-turn on Visas ... this is a big change in principle ... it's part of a wider package of measure to avert what is increasingly looking like it could become a crisis.
Yes, ministers say: "Don't panic. Fuel is available, do not panic buy at petrol stations", but I'm getting messages from MPs who are themselves stuck in queues in petrol stations, saying that action must be taken now and worry that ministers are underestimating the scale of the problem.
And it is a problem, because my understanding is that two weeks ago the civil service advice was quite calm, not predicting big shortages that could have a national impact.
But in the last few days it actually all changed. And now there are big concerns: Not just about the transport sector or the food sector, but as a result of those spiking gas prices they're now looking at consequences across a huge different range of industries: Food, production, even the NHS, even water purification are the kind of things that the government keeps under review.
I'm told water purification is one of the most sensitive things here. Nobody speaks publicly about it, but I understand that there is even difficulty getting those chemicals to water plants. Although so far there has not been any water shortages, but those are the kind of things that eventually get affected if the HGV drivers problem continues.
That's why a pretty fundamental U-turn looks like it's on the card by the government involving allowing non high skill professionals more entry into the country

| > Hard to imagine a more comprehensive collapse of the Vote Leave argument than what we're seeing here. | |
| > 1 October 2021: the date on which EU identity cards are no longer accepted for entry into the UK. How much worse can the delivery crisis get?
Truckers from most EU countries drive all over Europe with a truck licence and an ID card. Obtaining a full passport in order to deliver to the UK is a bureaucratic hurdle than any UK delivery fee bonus will be hard pressed to make worthwhile.

'Avoiding petrol stations'
Anywhere within 1/4 mile of one is jammed solid.

| > Scenes of #fuelshortages in Kent. This was last night at a big Sainsbury’s off the M20
There was no diesel left, only two petrol pumps remained operational. Huge queues to the petrol station were creating traffic jams at 9pm. By the time I got to fuel up there was so little petrol left it was trickling in at 1/4 the normal [speed] ...
As I was driving off, a visibly frustrated driver approached the Sainsbury’s staff (who were out controlling traffic) on foot and loudly protested that he was cut off by someone else in the queue.
This morning, the whole town felt quiet. There were no longer queues at small petrol stations because they had all run out of petrol. Instead, huge queues from all directions formed outside Tesco’s off the M20, blocking traffic in every direction. This was just before 9am.

| Johnson prepares to call in army as panic buying drains UK petrol pumps
... a survey of members on Sunday indicated 50 to 85 per cent of all independent service stations had now run dry, excluding motorway forecourts and some supermarket sites that had been given priority by oil companies.

On the other hand, it could have been chaos with Ed Miliband.
No 10 plans to lower salary level at which graduates start repaying loans >
| The government is planning to cut the earnings threshold at which graduates begin repaying student loans in a bid to save the Treasury money and push more young people towards cheaper vocational education. | |
r/uk:
| So...
High levels of inflation, not accompanied by salary raises in many cases (e.g. public sector)
Marginal tax rate thresholds that will not get uplifted by inflation in the coming couple of years
National insurance rise
Loan repayment threshold dropped
This is some sort of quadruple whammy on purchasing power for the young, who are already struggling. > | | | This was so inevitable.
So now a 42.5% tax rate from probably £20-23k for thirty years.
Fucking ridiculous.
Made even more ridiculous that a pensioner with the same income (and probably sitting on assets) will be paying a 20% rate at the same threshold.
