Die Sowjets waren halt fortschrittlich was Wissenschaft / Ingenieurwesen angeht.

| Joe Biden has played down the chances of brokering a post-Brexit free trade deal with the UK, as he held talks with Boris Johnson at the White House. | |
| "The Americans do negotiate very hard." | |

https://twitter.com/RepBrendanBoyle/status/1440527117482020869
| Some seem to be confused so let me explain. About 30% of US trade is with Canada & Mexico. China accounts for another 13%. As for the UK, it is 2.5%, the same as Taiwan, Vietnam, & India. So when some are confused why a trade deal with the UK isn’t a high priority, now you know. | |

| Like with fishing rights, the US FTA was something the government built up as urgent, transformational, and worth any sacrifice... right up until it failed to meaningfully secure it, at which point it suddenly started to agree with the experts that it's not a priority after all. | |
https://twitter.com/AnnaJerzewska/status/1440225432373137414
| Yes. It was never going to be a priority for Biden's administration. For the UK, the PR aspect of this deal was vital - to succeed where the EU has "failed".
But an FTA of this magnitude takes time and would require the UK to have a clear position on regulation and standards

| ["The U.K. is exploring joining the USMCA (trade deal between U.S., Mexico, Canada)":]
Would it be rude to suggest that this shows the UK government with just the teeniest bit of desperation for any US trade deal regardless of what it might be, because USMCA would be a US deal only not in any way tailored to the UK.
It should be noted these trade deals do not have the primary purpose of improving the UK's trade position, since if you talk to business this is not what they're asking for, not surprisingly as tariffs are such a minor part of modern trade. And we're a services exporter. ...
Performative trade policy for headlines, I get it. But in the mean time UK business wants to talk with government about the realities of modern trade and how problems with that eased. As a clue, largely not through the rather misnamed Free Trade Agreements. ...
A North American trade expert writes of UK kite flying on USMCA: ["Also, what incentive do Canada and Mexico have to let this happen? And have they read the auto Rules of Origin?!!"]
Anyway, I gather Thursday we'll seek to join Mercosur, and the Africa free trade area on Friday. Then the Gulf cooperation council next week, and, well, really any regional integration as long as it isn't in Europe, we don't set the rules, and it doesn't help our businesses much. ...
I don't think in fact the suggestion the UK join USMCA is in any way serious given it was not intended as open to others, and would present more issues than a bilateral negotiation. Probably just political signalling to a few different audiences.

The £7 pint is on its way, and rising beer prices show how inflation hits the lowest paid >
[£7 pint = 8,18 ¤ pro 568 ml]
| HGV driver shortages, staffing problems in hospitality, inflation trickling through into the real economy… it’s all leaving a rather bitter aftertaste at the bar.
The average price of a draught lager pint in Britain is now £3.87, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This is up 11p on July last year and 17p higher on the same month in 2019. But in certain areas, beer inflation feels positively Venezuelan.
A pint of mainstream pale ale at my local now costs £6.80. Pre-pandemic, it was just over a fiver. OK, this is west London, where average beer prices have long been outrageous thanks to gentrification and a growing thirst for flashy “craft” beers (tasting less well-crafted by the month, incidentally).
Some regulars are defecting to a nearby Wetherspoons, where the cheapest pints have previously sold for under three quid. But not even Tim Martin can hold back the tide. ...
Pubs had a reprieve during the pandemic, with VAT on food sales slashed to 5 per cent, but the rate will rise to 7.5 per cent at the end of this month before shooting back up to 20 per cent next year.

| Paul Kelley is one of the biggest turkey suppliers in Britain.
He’s given countless interviews with mainstream media about recent supply chain chaos but they refused to air a word of it as soon as he mentioned Brexit. ...
"The reason we're having all these issues is entirely because of Brexit.. the labour issue is not about Covid. It will be a car crash come Christmas"

Boris Johnson agrees to relax visa rules for foreign truck drivers >
| Prime minister said to have lost patience with bad press about fuel shortages and economic disruption ...
Home secretary Priti Patel was previously the strongest opponent of giving temporary visas to foreign HGV drivers, arguing it would lead to a stampede of different industries demanding similar preferential treatment. But with fears of panic buying at petrol stations, Patel has dropped her resistance and now agrees with transport secretary Grant Shapps that the proposal is worth pursuing, government insiders said. ...
Whitehall insiders said that any package was likely to be a set of temporary measures “lasting out six months, to see us through Christmas”. ...
Concerns remain over whether many European drivers will come to Britain when there are already shortages in continental Europe.
