Mafia the City of Lost Heaven is one of my top 5 games of all time. What Definitive Edition did was suck the soul out of an incredible game 19 years later, leaving behind a console-fied, dumbed down, version. Where to begin?
The voice acting is the first thing you notice. Paulie, Sam, and Tommy all went from sounding like Italian mob guys who aren't caricatures to NNNYEEEEH SEE, FUGHETABOUTIT. Paulie keeps his character more or less, but his voice actor is horrible and obnoxious. Sam sort of retains his voice, but his persona goes from the "straight man" that Tommy would confide in, to a cocky jerk. Tommy's voice actor was okay, but his personality got assassinated. Whereas originally he was a mellow but confident man and definitely not bloodthirsty, he went to being a cocky greaser type who happily kills scores of men and then hesitates to kill one more. Inconsistent character delivery and inconsistent motivations all around.
The car and gun features have been greatly reduced. Vinny the gun guy and Ralphie the car guy were super fun to listen to ORIGINALLY where they would tell you about the cars, the new technological improvements and how to steal them. Or the various guns and what was special about them. These characters now say a few words to you and largely exist in short cutscenes. Vehicle deformation is almost NONEXISTENT. Can't shoot tires off cars, can't break windows, knock off mirrors or cause grievous damage to them anymore. Cars just boringly smoke and stop running. This is such a disappointment from the original where car damage (in 2002) was exceptional.
Which brings us to gameplay. They removed free aim in car chases, the ability to end any chase mission early. Now they all end in pre-determined scripted paths. You chase people or get chased until they crash at which point the game says YOU DID IT. And not a moment sooner. No more skillfully nailing the driver or popping their tires, or anything creative. Some of the slower paced missions were redone and rearranged to have gunfights, like "Happy Birthday" where a dumb gunfight was shoehorned in. Other missions like "Lucky Bastard" were re-done to remove any tension and slow parts and instead threw in more extended scripted chases. The cover based shooting is okay. It doesn't detract TOO much from the game but the guns feel inaccurate and unsatisfying. Going for headshots is annoying, and enemies will frequently play whack-a-mole with you popping in and out of cover. Cars are also only accessible when the game wants you to, so in certain missions where there might be cars, you're not allowed to use them for no other reason than "we said so".
Lastly the story, while on the surface the story remains the same, its changed for the worse. The ending is entirely butchered, getting rid of Tommy's impactful speech and his confrontation with Sam. Tommy's character doesn't feel like a man going in too deep, and the twist at the end doesn't come as a surprise OR that the characters had decent motivation. Detective Norman speaking to Tommy in the diner to frame the story isn't written nearly as well and feels like it's taken from a bad mob movie instead.
Overall playing this game is like looking at your highschool sweetheart 20 years later only to see her with ugly plastic surgery and sagging boobs. Go play the original, don't waste your time here. Don't waste your time on the pointless collectibles or the lifeless free-ride mode. The remake didn't add anything to a great game, they only made it worse.

Richtig gutes Spiel.
Gibt auch eine Demo zum Anspielen.
