| Cabinet ministers are subject to scrutiny in the Lords, but the upper house works quite differently to the Commons, without the same routine of ministerial updates and urgent questions. In practice, this means that a lot of everyday business will be delegated to whoever is seen as Cameron’s number two – currently this would be Andrew Mitchell, the international development minister.
Will Cameron be subject to full scrutiny?
In the Lords, yes. While the chamber can seem more sedate than the Commons, the breadth of expertise among peers can make ministerial questions a tricky experience. Additionally, as foreign secretary, Cameron will be expected to do the usual round of media interviews, allowing journalists to quiz him about not just his day job, but tricky subjects such as the Greensill lobbying scandal and his record as prime minister. It could be interesting.

| However, even then the appointment is not without complications. As the SNP’s leader in Westminster, Stephen Flynn, was quick to point out on Monday, Mr Cameron will only be accountable to parliament’s select committees, rather than to the members directly, because he is not a member of the Commons.
Tory MP Sir Michael Fabricant was also among those complaining that Mr Cameron “won’t be accountable to MPs other than before a select committee” – noting that he will not be allowed to make statements, answer urgent questions, or take part in foreign office questions in the Commons.

| Supreme court concludes Rwanda policy unlawful because of risks to asylum seekers being sent there
Reed says, given this evidence, the court of appeal concluded that there were good grounds for thinking asylum seekers going to Rwanda were at risk.
He says the supreme court is unanimously of the view that the court of appeal was right.

E:
| Rishi Sunak’s key immigration policy has been dealt a blow after the UK’s highest court rejected the government’s plans to deport people seeking asylum to Rwanda.
Five judges at the supreme court upheld an appeal court ruling on Wednesday, which found that there was a real risk of deported refugees having their claims in the east African country wrongly assessed or being returned to their country of origin to face persecution.
The ruling undermines one of the prime minister’s key pledges – to “stop the boats”. The government claimed that the Rwandan scheme would be a key deterrent for growing numbers of asylum seekers reaching the UK via small boats travelling across the Channel – a claim that has been rejected by refugee charities.
The ruling come the day after the sacked home secretary, Suella Braverman, released an incendiary letter accusing the prime minister of breaking an agreement to insert clauses into UK law that would have “blocked off” legal challenges under the European convention on human rights (ECHR) and the Human Rights Act.

| Rishi Sunak’s government was plunged into further crisis when the immigration minister quit just hours after the prime minister tabled a bill to save his Rwanda deportation policy.
Robert Jenrick stood down after it was revealed that the legislation did not allow the government to override the international laws that have stopped the government sending asylum seekers to central Africa.
In a letter published on X, the MP for Newark said Sunak’s bill was “a triumph of hope over experience” and will mean that the policy will be challenged again in the courts.
Jenrick’s resignation will be seen as a move to position himself as the head of the growing rightwing rebellion aimed at ensuring that the UK can act unilaterally and send flights to Kigali.

Was ein Clusterfuck.

Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.
