Die fishing rights kommen gerade wieder. In wütende französische Fischer-Form.
https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/french-fishermen-block-exports-to-uk-christmas-brexit/
| French fishermen have threatened to block the port of Calais in the run-up to Christmas, stopping exports to the UK, in a growing row over fishing rights.
They claim the UK government has deceived them by failing to grant enough post-Brexit fishing licences to access British waters.
"As far as French fishermen in northern France are concerned, in the absence of any results, the blocking of the port of Calais and exports to the United Kingdom for the period leading up to Christmas is an option," said Olivier Lepretre, president of the powerful fishing committee for the northern Hauts-de-France region.

Beef Trends: British retailers turn to Irish beef processors to guarantee supply
| British retailers
Across the water, the British industry is still trying to grapple with huge issues around labour shortages in factories, a shortage of lorry drivers and issues around the supply of CO2 gas, which is used in packaging to prolong the shelf life of meat products.
The Irish Farmers Journal understands that a number of new contracts are close to agreement between some British supermarkets and Irish processors.
Retailers across the water are said to be nervous about the upcoming Christmas supply chain and are keen to avoid any situation where shop shelves are left empty, especially during periods where pre-Christmas offers on meat drive supermarket footfall.
Research has shown that beef is a major driver of supermarket footfall, so retailers treat meat contracts with high priority. This is good news for Irish beef finishers.

Intel not considering UK chip factory after Brexit >
| The boss of Intel says the US chipmaker is no longer considering building a factory in the UK because of Brexit.
Pat Gelsinger told the BBC that before the UK left the EU, the country "would have been a site that we would have considered". But he added: "Post-Brexit... we're looking at EU countries and getting support from the EU".
Intel wants to boost its output amid a global chip shortage that has hit the supply of cars and other goods. The firm - which is one of the world's largest makers of semiconductors - says the crisis has shown that the US and Europe are too reliant on Asia for its chip-making needs. Intel is investing up to $95bn (£70bn) on opening and upgrading semiconductor plants in Europe over the next 10 years, as well as boosting its US output. But while Mr Gelsinger said the firm "absolutely would have been seeking sites for consideration" in the UK, he said Brexit had changed this.

MP who said £82K salary was 'really grim' voted to slash welfare 49 times >
| The Tory MP under fire for saying surviving on £82,000 a year is "really grim" voted to cut welfare and benefits almost 50 times over a four-year period.
Sir Peter Bottomley, the longest-serving MP in the house of commons, was roasted Thursday for pushing for a 22 per cent pay increase because MPs should be on at least £100,000 a year. ... Living on such a stipend (£82,000), Bottomley believes, is "desperately difficult" for the younger MPs. ...
The Tory MP for Worthing West's comments - in an interview with the New Statesman on Tuesday - were particularly jarring at they came the day before his party reinstated the £20-a-week cut to Universal Credit, plunging millions of Britons into poverty - and as Therese Coffey, the Work and Pensions Secretary, was videoed singing 'I Had The Time Of My Life' at the Conservative Party conference.

Hundreds of schools told to stockpile food to make sure children are fed this winter >
| ISS, who offer hospitality and catering management, has told the 450 schools it cooks meals for that it is having issues with the “sourcing, packing and distribution” of food supplies.
The company added that “the problem will get worse and is likely to continue until at least February."
In an email seen by ITV News, staff in ISS school kitchens have been urged to “top up on long life, dried, tinned and frozen products to ensure that there will always be some form of food available in a worse case scenario.”
Fears of toilet roll shortage as spiralling energy prices could trigger supply crisis
| Manufacturers of toilet roll in the UK could be forced to cut production due to rising gas prices, it has been warned. ...
Andrew Large, director-general at the Confederation of Paper Industries, said its members will be "affected very, very severely" by the rising gas costs.
He said toilet roll and food packaging would likely be the worst-hit areas.
Vets in crisis: the perfect storm
| And then another pandemic was upon us: the puppy pandemic. According to the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA), 3.2 million households have acquired a pet since the start of the pandemic. Unfortunately, this astronomical increase in pet ownership has not been matched by the number of vets – in fact, for a number of reasons, the opposite has happened. ...
The more pressing upshot is the significant reduction in EU vets registering to work in the UK since Brexit. Not only does this reduce the workforce in general practice, but also in abattoirs and export work. It’s a double whammy hit of needing more vets for the increased workload in both of those sectors (directly because of Brexit) and having less EU vets available to undertake it. ...
People are suffering – vets, vet nurses, animal care assistants, receptionists, the admin team. We are all real people too; people who do not deserve to slog long hours dealing with an impossible workload to be screamed at by clients. We understand it is frustrating that you can’t get an appointment any quicker, but we are doing our absolute best – often to the detriment of our own physical and mental well-being. In a profession with an already worrying level of poor mental health and suicide, I am seriously worried for my colleagues. It is not sustainable to continue to work in this way.
The “perfect storm” of these factors combined has left us where we are now. Everyone is feeling overwhelmed; at best, practices are firefighting, at worst they’re imploding. It’s a vicious cycle – vets are exhausted and burned out, so are looking for a way out, which leaves those who remain even more stretched.

Nursing crisis sweeps wards as NHS battles to find recruits >
| Ministers are being warned of a mounting workforce crisis in England’s hospitals as they struggle to recruit staff for tens of thousands of nursing vacancies, with one in five nursing posts on some wards now unfilled.
Hospital leaders say the nursing shortfall has been worsened by a collapse in the numbers of recruits from Europe, including Spain and Italy. ...
The number of nurses from the European Economic Area joining the Nursing and Midwifery Council register has fallen more than 90%, from 9,389 in the year to 31 March 2016 to 810 in the year to 31 March 2021.
