EU in legal action against UK over NI Protocol breach
| Earlier Ms von der Leyen issued a statement confirming legal proceedings are under way against the UK government.
A "letter of formal notice" has been sent to Britain over its Internal Market Bill. "This is the first step in an infringement procedure," she said.
European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels today
Ms von der Leyen said Britain had been asked to remove the problematic parts of the Bill by the end of September. This deadline had lapsed yesterday.
The EC President said that the draft Internal Market Bill is "by its very nature a breach of the obligation of good faith laid down in the Withdrawal Agreement".
She added: "Moreover, if adopted as is, it will be in full contradiction to the Northern Ireland Protocol."
The Commission has invited the UK government to send its observations on the letter of formal notice within a month.

EU Ready to Call Johnson Bluff, Betting He Won’t Quit Talks >
| The European Union has no plans to offer concessions to Boris Johnson before next week’s Brexit deadline, betting that the U.K. prime minister won’t make good on threats to walk away from trade negotiations if he doesn’t get what he wants. The bloc is ready to let U.K. talks drag on into November or December, and even take a chance on Johnson pulling the plug on the deliberations rather than compromise on its red lines, according to a senior EU diplomat. The high-stakes strategy was confirmed by a second EU official. ...
EU officials said they are pessimistic about the chances of a deal because the disagreements between the two sides are about points of principle. For progress to be made, they said, the U.K. will need to change positions rather than necessarily intensify negotiations.
NHS faces drug shortages as Brexit stockpile used in Covid crisis >
| Hospitals could face shortages of drugs during the second wave of Covid because some of the medicines stockpiled for Brexit have already been used, NHS bosses have warned. ... problems associated with Brexit could conjure a “perfect storm” of problems this winter that could undermine care, including flu, bad weather, workforce shortages, a resurgence of Covid and an epidemic of burnout among staff. | |
City of London's Brexit Departures Are Speeding Up >
| Whether there’s a Brexit trade deal or not, the big investment banks are shifting significant resources to the EU. ...
As Britain and Brussels embark on the final stage of talks to determine their future trading relationship, the trickle of resources moving away from the City is turning into a steady stream. The biggest investment banks have been spending hundreds of millions of dollars in the midst of a global recession to lease real estate on the continent, while relocating activities and jobs to set up standalone operations in the EU. Although a single European rival to London may not emerge for some time, if at all, the shift is already posing questions about London’s future role in global finance — and about Britain’s coffers.

Simon Coveney: EU will not force a border on Ireland if no Brexit trade deal agreed >
| Simon Coveney says that Ireland will not be abandoned and forced to implement a border by the EU if a Brexit trade deal is not reached. ... if Britain implements the controversial Internal Market Bill, the EU will take further legal action rather than let the bill damage Ireland. | |

Rosenkrieg?
| "What will happen is the EU will require the UK to fulfil its obligations under international law, and it will have a knock-on consequence in terms of the relationship between the UK and the EU, because the UK needs EU facilitation in multiple areas from January 1, around data, around financial services, around aviation, around judicial cooperation and security cooperation, it's not like everything else is sorted and it's only the Irish issue is left outstanding. | |
