| I’m heading to bed. At this stage, #EuropeanElectionResults suggest that Britain is nigh ungovernable. Voters are trapped in Remain/Leave silos. Neither side has anything like a clear majority. If these results were reflected in a general election, it'd be a hung parliament.
The Brexit Party is doing very well, Lib Dems and Greens are doing well and the two established parties are doing terribly. Putting this result into a First Past The Post election would not produce a strong or stable government.
The Tories will be under pressure to elect a no-deal leader and deliver a no-deal Brexit, but there’s no parliamentary majority for it. Labour will be under pressure to move fully behind a 2nd referendum, but it’ll harm them in marginal seats. No cost-free solutions for anyone.
Meanwhile the smaller Remain/Leave parties will continue to surge but struggle to get near power. Good luck to the next PM (and the one after, and the one after etc) for resolving this mess. I have the sinking feeling Brexit will divide us for the rest of my working life.

"If there is no Brexit, I will never vote again in any election" | Zeit >
Three Brits meet up in Theresa May's constituency for dinner and to debate about Brexit.
| Jane: The EU would be fine if everybody was equal. But we in the UK work long hours. We work long hours to make Britain successful. And then you’ve got Greece. When they feel like it, they work. Like the other countries, which have siesta during the day. Instead of working hard, all they have to do is to take their cup and go to the EU. They say: The UK is doing well, can we have more money? The more successful you are as a country, the more money you put into the pot. That's how it works. [...]
We work like animals and we have to pay taxes – just to help those, who don’t want to work, those who have chosen a lifestyle of taking advantage of our benefits. They like it very much to live off our benefits. And that is exactly what I see some European countries, like Greece and Italy, doing.
That's what happened with Ireland. Do you know when Ireland joined the EU? I was there. I was in Ireland for two weeks. I was surprised. They were so happy. Because they get millions and millions from the EU. When do we get money? | | | Jane: My sister used to work at the supermarket. But nowadays, the big companies hire Poles or Romanians because they do the same work for less money. My sister is without a job now. Even in our coffee shops it’s the same. I was just at one. They only had foreigners. I had to point with my finger to show them what I wanted. The guy didn’t understand English. [...]
Another example: There is a lot of farm work where I come from, but locals can't get those jobs, because the jobs are taken by the Poles, the Bulgarians and God knows who else. You can understand the resentment there against the EU because the farmers would rather employ cheap foreigners to do the work. It's about jobs.

| Jane: I have my car washed down at this place where I live. It’s all run by Poles. People who live there call the people who do the work slaves. They’re not getting paid minimum wage, I think. But I say: I don’t care. Those guys are here, and they are paid something. They are offering a service. I am not responsible for this. Many see it the same way I do. The queue is down the road to get the cars washed. | |

Puh, schwere Kost am Feiertag.
| Jane ended up dominating the dinner-table debate just as Nigel Farage has dominated the European election campaign with his new Brexit Party. | |

| Jane: I don’t trust any newspapers or media outlets, not at all. [...]
Jane: If there's no Brexit, then our democracy has failed. If there is no Brexit, I will never vote again in anything. I will never vote again in any election. Because what’s the point? Why should you vote in this country?
You know what frightens me? It's all about the rise of the far right. [...]
My vote for Leave is still the right decision for me. I learned because of the referendum that the EU needs a completely new start. If the EU stays like it is, we will see many more exits like Brexit. | | | Was it actually a good idea to hold the 2016 Brexit referendum in the first place?
Jane: I don’t know. I just want Brexit and the best for our country. [...] [If Brexit makes the UK poorer] Maybe I'll move to Canada.
Und ihre Facebook-Freunde sind gemein zu ihr.
| Richard: People have been divided since Brexit.
Jane: I know families who don’t talk to each other anymore. Friendships have broken apart. Others have ended their relationship because of it. She was for Brexit, he was not. That’s it.
I don’t write anything on Facebook anymore. It was horrible. They called me stupid, sick, racist. It was too much for me, all these horrible, disgusting comments about Leavers. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I had to stop notifications. Friends I've known for years -- I can’t understand them anymore. They've lost their language and their manners. It just happened. And it was something that completely shocked me.
