| t's increasingly likely that Boris Johnson could face a possible vote of confidence in his leadership as MPs return to Westminster today after the half-term break.
Here’s a quick round-up of what’s been happening so far this morning:
Tory MPs have told the BBC a no confidence vote could be triggered this week
For a confidence vote to happen, 54 Tory MPs must write a letter to Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee
Sir Roger Gale, Conservative MP for North Thanet, told the BBC the Conservative Party is “spoilt for choice” when it comes to options for a new leader
Jesse Norman, the MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, became the latest Tory MP to announce that he has put in a letter to Brady
But ministers backed Johnson on Monday morning, with Health Secretary Sajid Javid telling the BBC that while he believes a vote of confidence is “likely”, it is “not something the country needs”

| So what did the prime minister say when he addressed Tory MPs a short while ago?
The BBC has learned that Boris Johnson promised to "lead you to victory again” and warned against descending into a "pointless fratricidal debate" about the future of the Conservative Party.
He also urged MPs to “refuse to gratify our opponents by turning in on ourselves”.
A senior party source said the PM had received a big cheer when he said they should not “dance to the tune of the media”.

"Do you have confidence in BoJo as leader of the Conservative party?"
211 Yes
148 No
(Majority 63)
Mal sehen.

| Pretty sure @DavidGauke is spot on. Johnson is going nowhere as he would happily sink the party to give himself more time in power, and he almost certainly believes he can win back many is the rebels.
Lacking all shame is rather freeing.

| Prime minister has won the vote but lost his leadership after Tories finally turn on him in large numbers | | | At 9pm on the dot, Brady announced the result. 211 for, 148 against. As expected The Convict had won the vote but lost the leadership. Worse even than the Maybot back in 2018. Johnson would say he was going to hang on – he’s a bad loser – but there was no coming back from this. It may be weeks, it may be months but Boris is toast. And the Tories would spend the time fighting each other to the death. While the country is on its knees. At a standstill. What a legacy. Johnson must be so proud. | |

Who are the main contenders to replace Boris Johnson?
| Liz Truss 5/10
Jeremy Hunt 5/10
Rishi Sunak 4/10
Nadhim Zahawi 3/10
Sajid Javid 3/10
Tom Tugendhat 3/10
Penny Mordaunt 2/10
Ben Wallace 2/10
Michael Gove 2/10

Andrew Marr: The Tories’ fatal attraction to Boris Johnson | New Statesman
| As in 1978, we are approaching the end of an era as the Conservatives flounder before events too big to control. | | | Now Johnson has what we can reasonably call the Brexit Party: placeholders, loyalists, a few ideologues and those who feel they’re only at Westminster thanks to him. But this group does not have a parliamentary majority.
Then there are the dozens of Tory traditionalists, outraged by his behaviour and more or less beyond his reach. To be sure, they have no kind of majority either.
Indeed, we’re now in the odd situation where, under a nominally Conservative PM, the biggest coherent voting bloc in the Commons is the Labour Party. Which (yes, yes)… has no majority.
... the sad truth is that the best political parallel for 2022 is looking less like the previous Conservative leadership contests and more like 1978. I’m not just talking about the inflation rate, which stood at 8 per cent then (lower than today’s 9 per cent). Nor the waves of strikes, among BBC staff, bakers, rail workers and lorry drivers, which would culminate in the “winter of discontent”. Nope. This is 1978 in the sense of an era ending, the premonition of a change in national direction caused by a growing belief that the government is floundering before events too big to steer through.
