Der Torygraph schreibt: EU preparing to give UK worse trade deal terms than Canada or Japan >
https://mobile.twitter.com/DmitryOpines/status/1219878852442411009
| Explanation:
EU signalling it may not grant 'conformity assessment' rights to UK in the upcoming FTA. This would make it more expensive and annoying for some UK exports, in a way that even many other EU trading partners don't have to deal with.
Conformity Assessment is a government saying: "OK we have different rules for products, but we both have good, responsible laboratories/testing centers. I'll tell you what our rules are and your labs can test. If they say a product meets them, that's good enough for us." This makes a big practical difference for some businesses, because they would otherwise have to go and get their product tested abroad in the importing country. This might be expensive, time consuming or impractical. Agreements on conformity assessment don't always come as part of an FTA. Governments will sometimes do a standalone deal called an "MRA" on just these sorts of questions.
Important note: Don't confuse conformity assessment, which concerns what a product IS, with the level playing field, which concerns the labour, environmental and state aid rules in the country it was made in.
| Conformity Assessment will be vital for industries such as car components. Our government can bravely announce "no alignment", but a company that wishes to export>EU will have to follow their rules whatever Sajid Javed says.
This is why some UK-based companies are now officially in the EU27 for type certification purposes.

| MPs overwhelmingly rejected all the changes made to the bill in the House of Lords earlier this week - on citizens' rights, the power of UK courts to diverge from EU law, the independence of the judiciary after Brexit and the consent of the UK's devolved administrations. | |

Trump is threatening a damaging new trade war with the United Kingdom after Brexit >
| President Donald Trump is threatening to launch a damaging new trade war with the United Kingdom, historically the United States’ closest ally.
In recent weeks, Trump and his allies have issued a series of trade threats to the UK on everything from the future of the Iran nuclear deal to Huawei to taxes on tech firms.
The threats have come as Britain prepares to leave the European Union on January 31.
The UK plans to seek a host of new trade deals, and Trump appears to be taking advantage of the country’s vulnerable new position on the world stage.

| Johnson's administration has pledged to implement a 2% tax on the revenue that tech companies such as Facebook and Google make from users in the UK starting this April. | |
Was ein Clusterfuck ...
