Hier leben ja einige? momentan in UK?

Tabloid Media Campaigns and Public Opinion: Quasi-Experimental Evidence on Euroscepticism in England
|
Using a quasi-experimentthe 30-year boycott of the most important Eurosceptic tabloid newspaper, The Sun, in Merseyside caused by the Hillsborough soccer disasterwe identify the effects of The Sun boycott on attitudes toward leaving the EU. Difference-in-differences designs using public opinion data spanning three decades, supplemented by referendum results, show that the boycott caused EU attitudes to become more positive in treated areas. This effect is driven by cohorts socialized under the boycott and by working-class voters who stopped reading The Sun. Our findings have implications for our understanding of public opinion, media influence, and ways to counter such influence in contemporary democracies.

|
The city of Liverpool has boycotted the British tabloid, the Sun, since 1989 (due to the tabloid's coverage of the Hillsborough disaster). As a consequence, the city of Liverpool has held more favorable views towards the European Union. This suggests that the Sun played a key role in Brexit.

UK extends Northern Ireland ‘grace periods’ for third time
Brussels and London seeking to avoid repeat of Brexit tensions dubbed ‘sausage wars’
https://twitter.com/DavidHenigUK/status/1435130296815521794
| Long grass is rarely newsworthy, so what happened yesterday on the Northern Ireland protocol is already old news. But I think it was actually quite significant - a sudden end of a two year phase of Brexit in an unstated compromise for all. Some thoughts...
... While demanding a renegotiation, the latest announcement extending grace periods shows a de facto acceptance of the Northern Ireland protocol. The UK government has decided not at this stage to pursue further unilateral breaches. It will be harder to do so in the future. ...
For the EU, they get a lot of what they wanted as the NI protocol remains in place, but the initial grace periods in effect become permanent. That happens a lot in trade and international relations. We presume they can live with it in effect. There have also been rumours about the EU wanting to take further action against the UK but deciding not to do so. Ultimately a case at the European Court of Justice might not make the point they would be hoping. They still want full implementation, but also have to wait.
For unionists the continued existence of the protocol is problematic but maybe not absolutely as disastrous as they claim, not least for giving them some continuing leverage over the UK government on anything else. While still calling for fundamental change.
Northern Ireland business gets some measure of stability, and some chance to find pragmatic solutions within the protocol framework. Its been hard work to date, there might just be an opening given some time now.
| None of this should be mistaken for a completely stable protocol situation. No party involved is completely happy (we can extend those involved to Northern Ireland nationalists and the Irish government). The harsh words are likely to continue. But with less immediate threat.
So why now to take the sting out of the Northern Ireland protocol? A suspicion that both sides recognised a stalemate with no easy way out and rising tensions all round. Not that they'll say it in exactly that way. Plenty more talking and threats to come.
But perhaps also from the UK in particular a need to move on, finally, from Brexit. The problem with keeping the Northern Ireland protocol at boiling point is that Brexit is still live, reminding us the government didn't get everything they wanted. And after Afghanistan, perhaps also a little realisation in both UK and EU that creating divisions over Northern Ireland wasn't looking too good, not least when the long grass was an available solution for the time being.
The arguments over the Northern Ireland protocol are far from over, there are still fundamental differences at play. There will be many hours of talking in various forms to come. It isn't stable. But it is today running a little cooler, for which we should be thankful.

Supermarket Food Shortages Will Be Permanent, An Industry Leader Has Warned
| The food shortages being reported by a growing number of household names are likely to last forever, a leading industry figure has said in a stark warning to the government.
Ian Wright, CEO of the Food & Drink Federation, said the system that for decades had meant British consumers could expect a full range of food or drink items in their supermarkets and restaurants was "over" and probably not coming back. ...
"The result of the labour shortages is the just-in-time system that has sustained supermarkets, stores, and restaurants so that food has arrived on shelves or in kitchens just when you need it, is no longer working, and I don't think it will work again," he said.
"We are now in for permanent shortages."

UK Inflation: Price rises see record jump as food costs soar in August >
| The annual rate rose from 2 per cent in July to 3.2 per cent in August. Some of the increase reflected coronavirus schemes last summer, such as eat out to help out, which lowered prices temporarily.
But UK prices have increased 2.7 per cent in the past six months alone, highlighting that most of the rise in inflation this year reflects higher charges for goods and services since Covid-19 restrictions began to be lifted after the winter wave of the virus.
In August alone the monthly rise in food, transport, recreation, furniture and restaurant prices was more than 1 per cent. >
