Five key takeaways from the first Conservative leadership debate | Guardian
| Here is what we learnt as the five challengers to be prime minister were tested for the first time on live television | | | Tom Tugendhat was the only one able to answer freely
Given the opportunity to answer “Yes” or “No” to the question “is Boris Johnson honest?”, Tom Tugendhat was the only person able to do it. He got warm applause for simply saying: “No”.
Kemi Badenoch came closest, saying “Sometimes”. Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss all refused to be drawn into the one word answer, and prevaricated.
Τugendhat essentially played the role of the minority party candidate in a multiparty debate, free to just speak his mind, call out the hypocrisy in everybody else, all the while safe in the knowledge there’s virtually zero chance he will end up elected.
...
There was little love in the room for any of the candidates
Applause was sporadic, and mostly directed either at Tugendhat, or when Sunak was singing the praises of an NHS worker who had asked a question. At the end Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked for a show of hands of the floating voters in the audience who had been persuaded to be more likely to vote Conservative. Ten hands went up at most.
It wasn’t a feral BBC Question Time audience, but at times, particularly when issues around trust and Partygate were being touched upon, the disdain for the audience with politicians was palpable. Whoever wins out of this contest in the end, they have an uphill climb.

| Lots of folk speculating about who wins and loses the Conservative leadership debate so I'll be controversial and say nobody, because all candidates are being forced by herd mentality towards roughly the same ground of tax cuts, culture war, and government revival.
Not just five candidates, but a Famous Five version of the UK in which there are gentle mysteries to be solved but otherwise all is good.
Unleas someone wants to actually let reality intrude.
First responses from all are a no score draw. No candidate I've heard even close to the goal. And they all look like they'd rather be somewhere else.
They all sound unenthusiastic as well as looking it. No voice modulation, no enthusiastic body language, they could all be autons.
Making Keir Starmer look charismatic.
Advert break the highlight of the debate so far.

| When I visited Brussels recently, there was real nervousness about Truss and her prime-ministerial prospects. She is seen as unreliable and untrustworthy not only by EU institutions, but also key member states. This sense of nervousness is likely to grow after today.
If she becomes PM, I think it will be virtually impossible to solve the stalemate over the Northern Ireland Protocol. Unlike Sunak, who could appeal to the EU with a fresh start, Truss simply isn't trusted. The result will be a trade war with the EU when the NIP bill becomes law.

In Brüssel wünscht man sich wohl "nicht Truss", wie oben erwähnt.
Und aus dem Artikel:
| Mr. Sunak will likely present himself as a responsible steward of the nation’s finances during a period of extreme stress, with surging inflation and the specter of recession. His victory caps a remarkable comeback from a few months ago, when he came under sharp criticism for the disclosure that his wife, Akshata Murty, the daughter of an Indian billionaire, did not pay taxes on all her income in Britain.
Ms. Truss will be viewed as the candidate of hard-line Brexiteers, pursuing aggressive negotiations with the European Union over trade in Northern Ireland. She will also likely play up her hard-power credentials as foreign secretary during the war in Ukraine.
Aber die Kräfteverhältnisse sind derzeit im Parlament halt so, wie sie sind, d.h. auch Sunak wird die ERG-Stinker nicht ignorieren können.

| Liz Truss? Jesus Christ 🤣🙄 | | | Trust remember we all laughed at trump too, then look what happened | | | Congratulations to the Labour Party on winning the 2024 General Election in a landslide victory against Liz Truss! | | | The very best labour could have hoped for! Win/win. | | | Lizz Truss inspires me, if someone that shit and that unenthusiastic can achieve such high office, I can achieve anything | | | If she's becomes PM I will never, and I mean never, have any form of impostor syndrome again. | | | Truss and Sunak. Ha what excellent news for Labour. | | | Liz Truss is absolutely the worst thing that can happen to us. Should be Sunak but its being voted by idiot party members. | | | Much prefer Sunak to Truss.
Though both are awful.
| | | I'm absolutely terrified of Truss winning after her comments about the Bank of Japan at the last debate. She's catastrophically ill-equipped to have any say in the running of an economy | | | Please be Sunak. They're both terrible and I think Starmer beats both of them but I can't put up with another two years of Patel, Rees-Mogg, Braverman in cabinet. | | | At least that finally answers the question of 'How stupid can Tory MP's get?"
Like seriously nearly every single poll of Conservative Members shows that Mordaunt is way more popular than either Sunak or Truss and that your own members feel she has a chance of beating Starmer in a General Election and what do they do? They vote for the other two instead.
| | | Would prefer Sunak but seems like it’ll be Truss. Poor candidates really and I think they’ll be an earlier election and they won’t do well. | | | Truss is going to be PM hahah fuck | | | Well, that is a truly disgusting choice. Then again, that's the problem with Conservative party leadership contests - you always end up with a Tory. | | | Liz Truss? FFS
It is horrifying that these candidates are the best they can come up with.
Rishi, who's eat out to help out caused a spike in covid infections, or Liz who probably couldn't find Russia on a map let alone deal with Putin. | | | Best case scenario for every party but the Conservatives. They just shoot themselves in the foot and the face simultaneously. | | | If you thought Boris Johnson was the worst PM of your life, take heart - he was only the worst PM of your life so far.

| Liz Truss has just become the bookies' favourite to become Britain's next Prime Minister.
Here's a reminder of some of her finest moments.
