| Ukrainian TVD, Day 148-158.
The last 10-days of July saw the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation (SVRF) offensive in northern Donetsk stall while the Armed Forces of Ukraine (ZSU) make incremental gains in Kherson as they prepare for a counteroffensive.
...
Given that the SVRF has begun to move forces out of the Donetsk OD to reinforce the Kherson-Odesa OD it is likely that Russian forces may transition to a general defense in Donetsk with limited offensive action concentrated south of Bakhmut.
The shift of focus south gives the ZSU an opportunity to conduct targeted counterattacks at weakened points of the line of contact to regain key terrain and place Russian units in a position of relative disadvantage once they renew large-scale operations. ...
Odesa-Kherson OD. Russian & Ukrainian artillery are engaged in a duel to cause maximum damage to command posts, critical infrastructure, supply & ammo depots, key lines of communication, and air defense systems ahead of a highly anticipated ZSU counteroffensive.
However, with the amount of forces the Russians are seemingly shifting toward Kherson the likelihood of a ZSU counteroffensive securing substantial gains or even pushing the Russians out of Kherson is unlikely. Still, drawing large amounts of Russian forces and logistical resources from elsewhere creates opportunities to throw the Russian war effort from its center of gravity so that Ukrainian forces can exploit tactical missteps and turn them into a strategic rout.
Black Sea OTMO. The past two weeks have seen a steady decrease in Russian Navy (VMF) activity in the NW Black Sea. Russian surface naval vessels have generally kept close to the Crimean coast or remained in the Sea of Azov. The bulk of the Russian Black Seas Fleet has remained at port in Sevastopol & Novorossiysk. The Russian Navy appears increasingly reluctant to risk its surface vessels coming in range of Ukrainian anti-ship missile batteries.

| Thoughts on the situation in Ukraine and the battle of Kherson that began weeks ago. Ukraine is poised to achieve the biggest operational victory since the Battles of Kyiv (IMO the only decisive/strategic victory), Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, & others.🧵
...
Ukrainian strategy can be summarized by “avoiding the enemy’s strengths.” Defend where needed & allow Russians to die against Ukrainian forces or attack through long range precision strikes (artillery/HIMARS) that allow Ukraine to avoid costly attritional close battles.
Make no mistake. Ukraine cannot achieve its goals through fires alone. If you want to retake, retain, control land, cities, Ukrainian populations – you have to close with and seize, secure, and defend those urban areas.
Fires are key for Ukraine, a smaller and weaker (quantity of needed equipment – artillery, tanks, IFVs) force to destroy critical requirements to Russian strengths & strategy – i.e. their logistics (ammo, fuel, food) & C2 – thus causing them to culminate before close fights. ...
IMO Ukraine cannot just siege Kherson. That is not the approach I see unfolding. Ukraine cares about the civilians trapped in the city. They also do not have the time to just siege the city. The more time that passes, Russia can shift forces from other areas to Southern Ukraine like we have seen recently.
Ukraine seeks to avoid a massive fight in the Kherson urban area. They do not want to destroy Kherson city to save it. They do not want to kill Ukrainian civilians or the city’s physical terrain and infrastructure.
HIMARS and other fires isolate Russian forces West of the Dnipro. This has included taking out key bridges, road intersections, ammunition supplies, command & control sites. Prevent/constrain the Russian forces from being resupplied, reinforced, or having a withdrawal option.
I do see Ukraine retaking Kherson, where Russia is weak at the moment. This will be a major win in claiming the initiative, international information campaign & maintaining support for Ukraine. But Russia maintains strength in the Donbas. Major fights still to come.
Bottom line. Yes, Russia is in running out of steam and capability, but it is still a major threat and Ukraine will not be able to achieve their goals without massive amounts of western weapons and support, more than the amounts flowing or promised to arrive today.

| Oh that’s very good.
While the Russians strip units out of the East to reinforce the South …
The Ukrainians start to take chunks out of the Izyum frontline (in the East).
Really what this is is interior vs exterior lines.
Get ready for a map…
The Ukrainians, who have the momentum now, are going to shift pressure from south to east and backwards and forwards.
And the Russians have to move their forces through a much larger arc than the Ukrainians do, and so the Ukrainians can make the Russians dance to their tune.
Nicely done.

| The long-term damage to the Russian army, marines, VDV from this war cannot be overstated. It goes beyond the numbers of men killed and equipment destroyed. This will also be a story of a military generation that is damaged or gone, and who remains.
Heavy losses to what professional NCOs RS had, junior + field-grade officers means that the group of people who signed up in the last 10-15 years, when the military tried to reform and who knew something even a little different than 90s or Soviet military life, are gone.
When this is over, the parts of those service branches left unscathed are conscripts, those officers or NCOs they didn't trust to go in the first place (who are back at home garrisons), senior officers who received commissions as Soviet officers (50/60 year olds) and those who survived in Ukraine, bringing back combat stress/trauma/criminality with them, right back into the barracks. This will be a toxic brew for incoming conscripts for years to come. Without significant oversight the conditions hazing could get out of control.
Then, add in the mass casualty events that the Russian military has not coped with since WW2, being sent in unprepared for the Kremlin's war of choice, the lies, the war crimes, atrocities, the list goes on and on.
In sum, the numbers of Russian casualties are severe enough -- but the damage that will ricochet around inside those service branches after this war is over, will be worse.

Einmal Turbine zum Mitnehmen, bitte! | SpOn
| |
https://twitter.com/CarloMasala1/status/1554926978754551809

| Overnight news of a devastating Ukrainian HIMARS strike against a Russian ammunition train suggests to me that the Ukrainians have been rather clever in exploiting the limitations of the local rail network.
2/ The attack took place at Brylivka railway station, south-east of Kherson. Coincidentally, it's an area I remember from a visit many years ago. The whole area is a vast, flat, arid and frankly mononous farming region watered by irrigation canals.
Brylivka owes its existence to the railway line, which was built in 1944 under Stalin to provide a second rail route to Crimea (the main line is further east, running from Melitopol to Simferopol). The village was founded the following year, presumably to house railway staff.
But the line at Brylivka has three peculiarities. First and most importantly, the entire line from Kherson to Dzhankoy is only a single track line. Single track lines have a very limited capacity to carry trains. (Thanks to bueker.net for the map.) ...
Second, Brylivka is equipped with a large set of passing loops (or passing sidings) which are long enough for large freight trains. Passing loops allow trains to pass in both directions on a single-line track. The Russian ammo train would have been stopped here. ...
So I think it's likely that the Ukrainians could predict where the ammo train would be stopping, because the single-track layout of the line likely required a stop at Brylivka's passing loops.
The damage at Brylivka certainly looks severe, though I would imagine the Russians will be able to repair the track within a few days. But there's nothing they can do about the track's layout.
Whatever else happens, the track is likely to remain single, there will continue to be a need for a passing loop at Brylivka, and trains will continue to need to stop there to allow other trains to pass. So this vulnerability isn't going to go away.

|
Veteran: Wo hast du gekämpft?
Busfahrer: Ich bin froh für dich. Hättest auch nicht kämpfen brauchen. Was hab ich mit zutun.
Veteran: Ich hab meine Beine verloren, Opa.
Busfahrer: Nein mein Sohn.
Veteran: Wir bewahren doch unsere Heimat.
