| Ruscist reconstructionists in the occupied territories never tire of repeating the Nazi referendum on the Anschluss of Austria. They are expecting 1938 results. Instead they will get Hitler’s 1945 outcome.

| Colour me sceptical, but I doubt we're about to see some sort of a major new escalation on part of Russia.
Laws, fake referendums, speeches on TV and even full mobilisation are not going to fix Russia's problems in the battlefield. It's tending towards collapse, not escalation.
Also, I stand by this statement:
| Much of the analysis still continues to focus on 'what Putin wants to do' rather than on 'what Putin can do' in Ukraine, which continues to skew our understanding of the war in stupid ways. And many are still ignoring the fact that Ukrainians have agency in their own fate.
The Russian defeat is going to be like the collapse of the USSR: almost everyone will be surprised when in happens; even the ones hoping for this outcome. And there will be much soul-searching afterwards, as people try to understand how their brains got so Russified.

| Russian mobilisation.
A thread
Chill everyone
Mobilisation in Russia doesn’t solve them anything.
It takes months and months to turn civilians into soldiers.
Russia needs soldiers yesterday not in six months
It also doesn’t solve their equipment problems
or their logistic problems
Nor the fact that their command structure is sclerotic and can’t make decisions. Nor integrate intelligence into operations.
The move is designed for domestic consumption in Russia.
Putin is taking some heat from his right flank for the recent rout of the Russian military.
The head bangers have been calling for a national mobilisation … and so here ‘it’ is
This of course won’t stop the western media whipping themselves up into a frenzy over it!
| |
https://twitter.com/RALee85/status/1572239628417093634
| Even if Russia mobilizes (I think deploying currently serving conscripts is more likely), almost all of these factors still favor Ukraine, including over the medium to long-term. A large number of poorly trained and motivated soldiers isn't a huge advantage.
| Ukraine has an advantage in:
-manpower
-learning lessons
-interior lines
-command and control/leadership
-clearer strategic goals
-precision fires
-morale
-ability to strike behind Russian lines (partisans)
-training volunteers
-NATO/US intelligence
Many of these will grow over time. I'm optimistic.
How and when these advantages will translate into further successes on the battlefield is hard to say, and there is no guarantee of another rapid Kharkiv-like success. But Ukraine is militarily in a stronger position, and it will likely only become stronger.
NATO policy should still be focused on providing Kyiv with more advantages to win the war (Russian officials still say regime change is the goal). NATO tanks and IFVs are more survivable and the Kharkiv offensive demonstrated their importance in this stage

| Today ...
That message is: “You chose to fight us in Ukraine, now try to fight us in Russia itself, or, to be precise, what we call Russia.” The hope is that the West will baulk at this.
Foreign troops crossing Russia’s borders, even if the border has just moved, will be used by Putin to justify renaming the “special operation” a war, moving toward mobilization, targeting Ukrainian sites it had previously avoided, & making its nuclear threats less abstract.
Some commentators are linking these new measures to the support and approval Putin supposedly got from major non-Western countries at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Samarkand.
I believe the opposite is true.
Those countries signaled to Putin that he should end the war as quickly as possible, and stop claiming to represent the entirety of the non-Western world. China by no means supports Russia’s actions in Ukraine, but Beijing’s doubts are rarely made public. This time they were, and clearly at China’s initiative. At the same summit, Russia’s Central Asian allies were less deferential to Putin than previously.
Moscow’s actions, therefore, are being taken to either end the war as soon as possible, or, if it that doesn’t work, to put the blame for that on other people, and turn Russia’s invasion of a neighboring country into a defensive war. Moscow hopes that that distinction will make the conflict more legitimate in the eyes of ordinary Russians, leaving the Kremlin free to make whatever decisions and take whatever measures it deems necessary.

PM Estland:

| The occupiers' playbook in action. As #Russia moves ahead with fake referenda in occupied territories of #Ukraine, let me say it loud and clear:
We will never recognize this.
Ukraine has every right to take back its territory. Donbas, Crimea, Kherson = it's all Ukraine.
Russia keeps using blackmail and illegally tries to take what doesn't belong to it.
Actions like this will have the opposite effect and rally our support to Ukraine. More military aid, more sanctions against the agressor, holding Russia accountable for its crimes.

❌Separatist leaders - ✅Collaborationists, ✅Russia-installed occupation administration
❌ Joining Russia - ✅ Annexation by Russia

There are no "Russian-backed separatists" in Kherson.
There is simply an occupying Russian army and a very small number of collaborators.
Do better.

Was ja offensichtlich nicht passiert.
