| More and more Russian officials are urging Vladimir Putin to get the hell out of the Kremlin as Moscow suffered another series of humiliating defeats in Ukraine this weekend.
Just one day after several municipal deputies in Putins hometown of St. Petersburg called on the State Duma to try the Russian leader for treason, their colleagues in Moscow joined in and demanded he step down because his views are hopelessly outdated.

| In Kherson RUS actually shortened the defence lines so as to get within range of their own artillery from the east bank of the Dnieper. We are talking about a withdrawal of 5-10km towards Kherson. Such are the effects of the problem in artillery ammunition supply.

Wie hier am 20.8. vorhergesagt:
https://twitter.com/Fireblade577/status/1561039725024235520
| At some point in time we may see the Russians forced to withdraw to within 10km of the Dnieper as this would allow them to be supported by their artillery from the Eastern side of the Dnieper thereby eliminating a significant proportion of supply required West of the Dnieper
By doing this they might cut down the need to provide adequate supply in the bridgehead by up to 50% (by weight) as they no longer have to ferry artillery shells across the Dnieper

| So if the RU army is is retreating to have artillery cover from the other side of the river, they face two problems.
First of all, they get squeezer in between the AFU and a river. That cant be good.
Secondly, the AFU has longer range artillery, so they might not need to worry that much about counter battery artillery since they can just stay out of range and still have complete fire control over the Russians.
This actually sounds like a retreat to me. The Russians would do that with the cover of massive amount of artillery, so they need to be closer to the Dnipro to do that.

| 🧵 Some highlights of a podcast of Michael Kofman in conversation with Dmitri Alperovitch today, discussing Ukraine's spectacular Kharkiv offensive:
Kofman: "two main blunders...massive military intel. failure because they clearly didn't see this build up & didn't react to it. And secondarily...the Russian military had still been trying to push largely unsuccessfully, against the Ukrainian defensive line east of Kramatorsk"
Kofman says he was sceptical Russia could've taken Kramatorsk. But offensive "basically now alleviates much of the pressure on this part of the Donbas and it will essentially put Russian forces on the defensive, at least for the foreseeable future, going into the winter"
Kofman: "it's going to be a q of to what extent Ukr can capitalise on this momentum...they're likely going to push back line towards Lysychansk & Severodonetsk...Russian military right now is clearly in retreat & will probably try to reset a defensive line somewhere in Luhansk"
Kofman: biggest issue was Ru lack of reserves. "what reserves they tried to throw into the region showed up too late and failed. You actually saw both 90th Tank Division forces to come in and ... 3rd Army Corps ... drive down and attempt to make contact but didn't make it"
Kofman: "folks don't appreciate how quickly Ukrainians bypassed Russian defences...it's in some ways a v. remarkable offensive given speed at which it was prosecuted...Ukr air defence probably the thickest around Kharkiv" & Ru air force "not really willing to put itself at risk"
Kofman: lot of regular units in Kharkiv were Western Military District. Western MD "has performed..worst out of all the military districts so far in this war..badly mauled in the opening phase [&] probably had biggest struggles in terms of force quality & ability to reconstitute"
Kofman: "the big issue is a structural problem". Russians "do not have the manpower to sustain this war...the force quality is going to continue to deteriorate. They do not have the available forces to conduct rotations; the Ukrainians do, so Russian troops...get exhausted"
Kofman: "lack of manpower, lack of force availability & the deterioration of Russian force quality has led to a situation where Ukraine has a clear manpower advantage...It's able to reconstitute forces better, can put together more than one operational-level offensive at a time"
Kofman: "clearly, Ukraine is capable of conducting offensive operations & clearly they're capable of integrating different types of forces to engage in a combined arms offensive". Q was: did they have skill at unit level, could they co-ordinate brigades? "Answer seems to be yes".
Kofman: Kherson was meant to play out over weeks or months. "You expect to make initial gains then Russian forces will retreat from forward defensive positions to secondary positions. The offensive may appear like it stalls out or slows down. That may not be the case."
Kofman: "Kherson is not a feint...There are two offences progressing at the same time and yes, Ukraine had enough forces for both."
Is Russia capable of counter-offensive in Kharkiv? Kofman: "I don't know. It's v early into trying to figure out what amount of Russian forces have retreated from the pocket", how much equip & ammo they abandoned, status of reserves sent into fight & lines to which Ru retreating"
Kofman: Russian "production capacity in no way is going to keep up with artillery usage demand...Russian defence industrial complex start[ing] to ramp up production, but that's going to take some time and still not at all going to be commensurate with their usage."
Kofman: "I think the first question is: is this going to be the event that leads Putin to realise that Russia is visibly losing some war and that the Russian military isn't going to grind the Ukrainian forces down, like he has assumed for some time?"
Kofman: "despite all the evidence, Putin has been operating under the assumption that the Russian military ultimately is going to win, which somewhat defies the objective reality of the situation we're in [given] all the structural issues that the Russian military has"
Kofman on whether Russia can conduct mass mobilisation: " Russian military is not a mass mobilisation army the way the Soviet military was...somebody has to train [and] house them. They have to have equipment. They have to be turned into units...That's why it doesn't work."

| Russian chat shows always had the “NATO shill guest” who said relatively sensible things and could then be torn down by the others.
But Boris Nadezhdin here speaking some dangerous truths, you wonder if he might simply get arrested soon.
The guests all seem genuinely emotional and nervous here - not the performative-emotional we’re used to. Seems the hunt for who to blame for the messed up military campaign (the “criminally irresponsible” in the words of a guest) may get underway soon.
"Regarding our non-comrade Nadezhdin, I again urge you to watch your language" sounds like something from a 1936 party meeting.
Said quietly and with disdain, sounds like genuine threat, not screaming-Zhirinovsky-circus brand of arguing these shows have perfected over time.

| A little map of the situation in Northern Luhansk after the rout of the russian invaders from Kharkiv Oblast.
Black 1 = the Oskil River frontline russia tries to establish.
Red 2s = the russian units retreating - those fleeing from Northern Kharkiv are on exterior lines and therefore need much more time to reach the Oskil River, than the decimated russian units that fled from Izyum over the Oskil dam. However those russian units lost much of their equipment and vehicles, and all their ammo stores, so they are in no shape to defend a new Oskil frontline.
Purple 3s = are the two bridges on the last railway in Northern Luhansk the russians control. ...
Once Ukraine HIMARSes the two bridges ... then the massive amounts of ammo, supplies and vehicles russia has amassed near Belgorod have to make a wide detour to Rostov-on-Don before they arrive in Luhansk.
Luckily both bridges are in M142 HIMARS range (Yellow circles) and will be gone in a few days.
If Ukraine chooses to liberate Northern Luhansk now, then speedy advances from Kupiansk over the Oskil or North from Lyman (Blue 4s) will crush russian hopes of establishing a new frontline on the Oskil.
If Ukraine crosses the Oskil, then the next geographic feature suited for a new russian frontline is the Aidar River (Grey 5), but that is so close to the russian border, that russia would likely give up all of Northern Luhansk and retreat South of the Siverskyi Donets... which is where russia was before 24 February. In short russia would lose every bit of Luhansk occupied at massive cost since the start of the full invasion this year.
I believe Ukraine will cross the Oskil, because it's an easy and quick victory... even though I still believe that the war-deciding battle against the russian army will be fought to the South of Zaporizhzhia: between Melitopol, Perekop and Mariupol.
And that the war will be over once Ukraine attacks East from Vuhledar and envelopes Donetsk city from the South.
This war isn't over yet... but from this week russia isn't capable to go on the offensive... Ukraine can and will now strike where and when it wishes, and russian forces will be routed every time.

A Ukrainian Victory Would Liberate Eastern Europe | FP
| Given Lukashenko’s decision to go all in on Putin and his war, a Ukrainian victory could very well lead to a free Belarus. But the knock-on effects for the European security order would be felt beyond Belarus.
The fallout would also be felt in countries struggling to free themselves from Moscow’s influence such as Georgia and Moldova, weakening the influence Moscow is able to wield through oligarchic structures. ...
Ukrainians are fighting not just for their own sovereignty and independence but also for the second liberation of Eastern Europe, finishing the process that began in 1989. The West needs to prepare itself to manage this potential contingency.

Ukraine has earnt nothing less than our full support in bringing Putin to justice for each and every crime he has committed. There can be no compromises, excuses or exceptions.
Let me be frank. It is now beyond doubt that Ukraine could have thrown Russia out months ago if they had been provided with the necessary equipment from day one.
If we had armed Ukraine faster, thousands of homes would have remained standing. Thousands of lives would have been saved. Thousands more children would now be safe with their parents. We must recognise the fact that appeasement did nothing to protect them.
The people of Ukraine have done more than enough to earn our respect. We have been humbled by their achievements. Now we must help them end this war swiftly and forever. Here’s how:
